Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: New climate law should help until 2045!

A new era of climate protection begins in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The red-red state government has launched a revised climate protection law, now officially known as the “Climate Compatibility Act”. This ambitious project was presented by Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus and is intended to make the country climate-neutral by 2045. The ambitious time frame was originally set at 2040, but this was abandoned in favor of a more realistic implementation. In the current situation, which Backhaus describes as “dramatic”, changes must now be implemented faster and more noticeably.

The law aims to reduce CO2 emissions from key sectors such as energy, transport and agriculture. The basis for the planned reduction is based on 2018 emissions, which were over 20 million tons. A specific goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by more than half by 2035 in order to reach almost zero by 2045. A particular focus is on moor protection, as drained moors make a significant contribution to CO2 emissions.

Steps for implementation

The requirements for the various sectors are due to come into force in 2027, after the next state election, and the law will be discussed in the state parliament in just two weeks. Despite these initiatives, there is criticism. The Greens warn that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is missing opportunities in the areas of climate protection and environmental management. Environmental associations are demanding that the climate protection law be passed before the state elections in order to ensure broad support.

Public support and challenges

Minister Backhaus emphasizes that climate protection should take place without overwhelming the population. However, there are challenges that raise concern. Extreme weather situations, such as heavy rain, drought and heat waves, which are also occurring more and more frequently in other parts of Germany and beyond, make the need for action even more urgent. The introduction of 19 tipping weirs should also help to specifically regulate the water level in critical areas.

In other areas of the economy, adapting to new circumstances is also a hot topic. So reported Irish Times that Riot Games has generated significant profits from the booming esports and digital content market. With sales of 1.85 billion euros in 2024 and a pre-tax profit of 587 million euros, the company shows how digital creative industries are flourishing.

Whether in the gaming industry or in climate protection, it will be exciting to see how the country's politicians and the economy will respond to the challenges. One thing is certain: climate change and its consequences can no longer be dismissed and require flexible and well-thought-out solutions now and in the future.
