Brown bear Felix: euthanasia after 30 years of adventures in the bear forest

In a sad mood, the animal lovers gathered today in the Müritz Bear Forest to say goodbye to their long-time resident Felix. The 30-year-old brown bear was euthanized on October 7, 2025 due to his severe osteoarthritis and the associated changes to his spine and joints. Using X-rays and a CT scan, the veterinary team determined that Felix could no longer live a pain-free life, which ultimately led to this heartbreaking decision. After his long journey through life, all that remains is to remember him, which is immortalized by a memorial stone under a 200-year-old hornbeam tree in the park. calf reports that Felix spent 18 happy years in the natural bear forest after he moved there with his brother Ben and mother Maya from a small enclosure to the Löffingen Black Forest Park.

Felix’s life was characterized by a constant striving for more space and freedom. After his brother's death, he lived alone in a large forest enclosure, but the challenges of osteoarthritis eventually took a toll on him. Now he is no longer with us, but he will remain fondly remembered in the hearts of those who knew him.
