Demmin on the upswing: hope for the city center and new impulses!
A lot has changed in the city of Demmin in recent years. After the city suffered a dramatic 40 percent decline in population after reunification, there are now rays of hope. According to Mayor Thomas Witkowski (CDU), 2024 saw the first increase in population since reunification. A whopping 16 people, which is definitely a reason to be happy for the city. Efforts to revitalize the city center are showing initial success, as NDR reports.
A key player in this change are the initiatives to strengthen the local market. The reintroduction of weekly markets as well as regional and flea markets has significantly increased the pulse of the city center. Sahra Schramm from the municipal economic consultancy “(IM)PULS” puts it in a nutshell: administration and business must work more closely together in order to continue the positive development. The business consultancy offers free advice and workshops, which are of great benefit to many local entrepreneurs.
New perspectives for retail and services
The changes in the business landscape are obvious. According to Schramm, retail is increasingly being replaced by healthcare and service sectors. Also Dr. Beate Hollbach-Grömig from the German Institute for Urban Studies is keeping an eye on what is happening and is examining the future prospects for Demmin. During city walks with residents, the city's strengths and weaknesses are analyzed and valuable insights are gained.
Accompanying measures such as extended opening hours of the swimming pool and open-air concerts also contribute to the positive atmosphere. But not everything that glitters is gold: the busy federal highway that cuts through the town center is perceived as an unmistakable obstacle to a lively city center. Unfortunately, the municipality has so far been unsuccessful in its attempts to establish a different traffic route.
