Specialists discuss news about lung cancer in Neubrandenburg

On July 14, 2025, an exciting summer training course organized by the Mecklenburg Lake District Lung Center (MSE) took place in the Neubrandenburg freight yard and was entirely dedicated to the topic of “Standards and news on lung cancer”. Around 60 doctors and medical professionals took part to find out about current developments in lung cancer diagnostics and therapy. PD Dr. med. Christoph Schäper from the Amsee Clinic led the event and contributed his extensive knowledge.

The training covered a range of important topics: from lung cancer screening programs to staging issues and modern surgical procedures to palliative medicine concepts and the latest chemotherapy and immunotherapy approaches. The highlights included innovative devices in the radiotherapy clinic that can expand the treatment spectrum. Dr. Schäper particularly emphasized the challenges that provide care close to home in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - due to long distances and minimum case numbers.

Background and challenges

Lung cancer remains a serious health problem in Germany. According to gelbe-liste.de in 2018, 35,290 men and 21,930 women were diagnosed with this cancer. The survival rate after five years is between 10 and 20 percent, which is why lung cancer has the highest mortality rate among tumor diseases. The new S3 guideline “Prevention, diagnosis, therapy and aftercare of lung cancer” has also been revised in order to optimize treatment and improve the quality of life of patients. The German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine (DGP) and the German Cancer Society (DKG) took the lead.

A central goal of this revised guideline is to support physicians and patients in medical decisions. The recommendations are aimed at doctors in both outpatient and inpatient contexts and are intended to fundamentally improve the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer patients.

Training for the future

The MSE Lung Center has already announced the next free training course for everyone who is interested in the subject. This will take place on September 10th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Clinic Neubrandenburg and will deal with interstitial lung diseases. The focus will be on topics such as etiology, pathology, diagnostics and therapy, supported by the role of interdisciplinary boards.

Continuous further training and exchange among experts are essential in order to meet the challenges associated with lung cancer. It remains to be hoped that these efforts will continue to improve treatment standards in the future and increase the chances of survival for those affected. Please feel free to find out about new developments at the events to stay up to date in this important field.
