Interior Minister Pegel outraged: Attacks on police and fire departments are increasing!
The most recent incidents involving attacks on rescue and law enforcement forces are making people sit up and take notice. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD) has spoken out decisively against growing aggressiveness towards the police and fire brigade. This escalation is particularly evident in recent operational reports, which are increasingly accompanied by obstructions and insults. “This is unacceptable,” said Pegel, expressing his outrage at the behavior of bystanders during the operations.
There was a particularly impressive example in Barth: an intersection had to be closed when a rescue helicopter landed. Drivers and passers-by ignored the barriers and even gave the firefighters the middle finger. Such incidents are not only annoying, they are also dangerous and show how much respect for the work of emergency services has disappeared.
Deployment in Neubrandenburg
Another incident in Neubrandenburg illustrates this problem. A 41-year-old disrupted a police operation and insulted the officers. Despite repeated requests, she refused to provide her personal details and threatened to use pepper spray. Her husband went further and tried to push the police away, which ultimately led to his arrest. Around 40 people surrounded the scene and the woman actively mobilized the group against the police. A 48-year-old in the crowd also showed little respect for emergency responders and tried to free the man, forcing police to use irritants to control the situation.
These incidents are not just isolated events – they fall into a worrying pattern that also has legal dimensions. According to Section 113 of the Criminal Code, resistance to law enforcement officers is a criminal offense that prohibits violence or threats against these people while carrying out law enforcement acts. The legislature has set clear limits to protect the integrity of officials and ensure the authority of state actions.
The legal background
The penalties for resisting law enforcement officers are significant and can be up to three years in prison or a fine - and in the case of serious offenses even up to five years. This shows how seriously the legislature takes these crimes, after all, most convictions are recorded in connection with aggressive behavior towards uniformed people. In 2021, around 5,000 people were convicted under Section 113 of the Criminal Code in Germany alone, reflecting an alarming trend.
The fact that 90% of those convicted are men and around 20% receive prison sentences highlights the need for safety and respect for those who keep us safe to be paramount. The recidivism rate of those convicted also raises questions and shows that there is an urgent need for action.
Taking such massive action against emergency services is not only unacceptable, it also endangers the safety of everyone involved. Citizens are encouraged to support the work of the police and fire departments instead of hindering them. Each incident reduces respect and trust in institutions - a worrying trend that urgently needs to be reversed. In these challenging times, the support of the population for the emergency services is more important than ever.
The reports of such attacks not only surprise the emergency services themselves, they also represent an appeal to society to take responsibility and act with respect. The incidents, which are far from acceptable, clearly show that a rethink is necessary here.
