Free menstrual items: 30 schools set signs for girls!
In a pioneering step, 30 schools in the Mecklenburg Lake District district have now decided to provide free menstrual items. This offer aims to enable students to learn carefree and to reduce the fear of unforeseen situations during class. The district student council has launched this initiative, and the headmaster has agreed on what a positive sign is in the direction of an open handling of menstruation that is already being discussed socially. Many schools had already created opportunities before this decision to support girls in an emergency by making tampons or binding from the secretary or the school social worker. Student spokesman Finn Goepel underlines that this decision shows how effective the influence of student representatives can be and that it is important to find hearing.
But these measures are not alone. The State student council Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania calls for a full introduction of menstrual products in all schools in the state. Many students are at a sensitive age in which menstruation can often occur unexpectedly in class. For this reason, the establishment of easily accessible menstrual products on school toilets is required. New Zealand has already acted as a pioneer here by offering all schools since June 2021.

But how can you make sure that these products are actually available? The first schools already have funds for menstrual products that are used in sex studies. Schools are recommended to develop concepts for implementation and to conduct a dialogue with the management of biology. The pupils: Hamburg's inner chamber offers support in providing menstrual products and is available as a contact. It is important that the opinions of the students: inside and that there are clear solutions to address concerns about abuse or environmental pollution through conventional products.
A possible approach to ensure access to these products could be tampon dispensers that are regularly refilled by the school staff. Alternatively, the output could also be made through the trust students: inside or directly by teachers. In any case, care should be taken to ensure that the offer is as unproblematic and barrier -free as possible, so that every student can help in an emergency.
a right to menstrual products
The provision of free menstrual items is now considered a fundamental right that is not only widely discussed in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but increasingly also in other federal states and countries. Numerous initiatives come for an annual budget to provide the necessary funds so that all schools can offer the students the required products.
For more information, interested students can get in touch with the local district student: Inner Councilor or the Students: Commerce in order to receive support. It is also recommended to think about alternatives such as menstrual cups in order to take environmentally friendly options into account and to promote cooperation with environmentally conscious providers.
Especially at a time when menstruation is no longer a taboo subject, but is openly discussed, it shows how important it is to recognize the needs of all students and act accordingly. This takes another step towards equal opportunities in schools.
