Neustrelitz: Secrets of the streets – discover the history!

Today Neustrelitz experienced an exciting city historical evening walk that brought together around 30 interested people between the ages of 6 and 85. Led by Dorothea Klein-Onnen, art historian and librarian, the participants learned exciting stories about the origins of the city and the naming of its streets. The starting point of the tour was the cultural quarter on Schlossstrasse, which made for a successful start.

A highlight of the walk was the explanation of the baroque town planning of Neustrelitz, which inspires people across Europe with its square market square and the unique street star. As NDR reports, Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel was not only a city architect, but also responsible for many of the remarkable buildings in Neustrelitz and thus had a lasting impact on the face of the city.

Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel and his significance

Buttel was born in Meseritz as the son of a master bricklayer and developed into a central figure in the region's architecture. After his journeyman's examination, he initially worked as a practical surveyor and later volunteered for the military, where he fought in the Battle of Waterloo. After studying in Berlin under Karl Friedrich Schinkel, he worked on important construction projects and eventually became a valued court architect who further developed the city with his knowledge and skills. Wikipedia gives us a deep insight into his life and achievements.

The streets that were discussed during the tour are particularly worth mentioning. The Töpferstrasse, formerly known as Lange Bruchstrasse, got its name because of the potters who fired tiles there. The anecdote about the Katersteig is also exciting, named after a pub that was known as “the sharp corner” and was notorious for its homemade schnapps. Strelitzer Strasse, on the other hand, has an eventful history that went through several renamings, including Adolf-Hitler-Strasse and Stalinstrasse, before returning to its original name.

Positive feedback and outlook

At the market square, the conclusion of the informative tour, the feedback was consistently positive. The interest in the city's history is clearly noticeable and shows that such events make an important contribution to identity formation and a sense of community. The next city historical evening walk will take place on September 26th on the topic “Lost Places – Hidden Places in Neustrelitz”.
