Pommernkogge Ucra: On course for the new season in Torgelow!
The Pomeranian cog “Ucra” from Torgelow is back on track. The historic cog was perfectly prepared for the coming season at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast after four weeks of intensive maintenance work. On Tuesday, the eight-person crew set off with the traditional wooden ship towards their home port of Ueckermünde, so their arrival there is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, depending on the weather conditions. The visit to Peenemünde, a stopover, is part of this exciting journey, which increases the anticipation of the crew and the community even further. NDR reports that the “Ucra” belongs to the traditional ship association “Ucra – die Pommernkogge e.V.” belongs and is used primarily to maintain maritime traditions and for excursions.
The history of the Pomeranian Cog dates back to 2001, when the reconstruction of this impressive medieval ship began at the historic Ukrainian Shipyard. The “Ucra” has been owned by the city of Torgelow since 2011 and has established itself as a floating museum that vividly conveys the stories of the Hanseatic era. The Pomeranian Cog homepage also offers exciting insights, from guided tours to project days for school classes to topics such as weddings and company outings, which are organized for anyone interested.
Diverse possibilities for teaching history
The Pommernkogge is not only a fascinating excursion destination, but also a place where history can be experienced. Day trips in the wake of the Hanseatic League offer the opportunity to experience the Hanseatic era up close. Ship models from different historical eras and finds from the region provide an exciting insight into the past. The ship has developed into a cultural contact point that is not only interesting for historians, but also appeals to all history enthusiasts.
Community centers play an equally important role in society. They offer places to make social contacts, exchange knowledge and strengthen the community. These centers, as they have expanded in terms of their function, offer workshops, language courses and many cultural events. They are spaces that promote inclusion and serve as a crucial resource, especially for immigrant communities. Herstage highlights that such centers also contribute to economic development and thus support the local community.
Given the many challenges that modern society presents, it is crucial that such cultural and community-building initiatives are continued and supported. Both the “Ucra” and the community centers show the potential that lies in joint activities and cultural exchange.
