Heavy rain and storms: MV fights against damage and traffic cancellations
On Monday afternoon, June 24, 2025, a strong cold front swept across Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and caused plenty of action with strong winds and rain showers. The fire brigade had to be deployed in several regions, including the Mecklenburg Lake District and Western Pomerania, to repair storm damage. Intervention took place mainly in Demmin, the Müritz region, Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Gützkow. It was necessary to clear fallen trees and branches from the streets over 60 times. Fortunately, there were no injuries, although one car was damaged.
Things became uncomfortable on the idyllic island of Hiddensee because the wind pushed the Baltic Sea water onto the beach and some sections were flooded. The ferry connection between Zingst and Hiddensee, which was discontinued, was particularly affected. The White Fleet also had difficulties operating some of its connections and the Wittow ferry on Rügen was expected to be canceled for the whole of Tuesday. There is hope for the Rügen ferry between Stahlbrode and Glewitz, as it is scheduled to run again from 12 p.m., but some passenger ship tours from Sellin, Baabe and Thiessow did not take place.
Severe weather warnings in focus
The severe weather center provided information about the current warnings in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which applied to the Bay of Mecklenburg, Bay of Pomerania, Rügen and Usedom. After all, anyone who wants to be informed can access the overview maps that show the different types of severe weather such as storms, heavy rain and thunderstorms. Warning levels from yellow to purple indicate the potential danger, with levels orange to red in particular currently in force. Here nature makes it clear that it doesn't know how to joke, and it is important to pay attention to new things, such as thunderstorm warnings or heavy rain. The severe weather forecasts are constantly updated by experienced meteorologists in order to provide citizens with the best possible information.
Train travelers from Berlin were also not spared from the storms. Routes such as Berlin-Hamburg and Berlin-Rostock had delays and cancellations as fallen trees hindered traffic. The railway line between Schwerin and Hagenow was also temporarily closed on Monday evening, which led to further diversions and delays. Things got really turbulent on the route between Hamburg and Berlin, which was closed for some time - but you can now travel regularly again.
Local events affected
Visibility is not only limited on the roads under the given weather conditions. Leisure activities also had to suffer: the Stralsund Zoo closed earlier than usual, which was a disappointment for many families. The planned open-air concert in the Endingen monastery ruins could not take place due to the weather and was quickly moved to the Niepars gymnasium. A good move for the organizers to avoid ruining the event.
The current events in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania clearly show that nature has its own rhythm and we should always pay close attention to the whims of the weather. After all, even a simple trip to the beach can turn into an unexpected adventure when the waves get bigger or the wind blows harder. We can only hope that the weather will calm down soon and we can enjoy the beauty of the region again without any worries.
