Neubrandenburg's new mayor Nico Klose: A breath of fresh air after the scandal!

On July 18, 2025, Nico Klose, the new mayor of Neubrandenburg, will officially begin his term of office. Klose, who is independent of a party, clearly prevailed in the runoff election in May: with 64.95% of the vote, he left his competitor Frank Benischke from the CDU behind, who received 35.05%. At his inauguration in the city, which was attended by around 300 citizens in the House of Culture and Education, Klose took his oath and emphasized the importance of attitude, responsibility and strong cooperation in politics. These issues are particularly relevant after his predecessor Silvio Witt left office early following a conflict over rainbow flags.

In October 2024, after nine years as mayor, Witt passed the baton to Klose in order to protect himself and his family. The pressure on Witt became increasingly unbearable, which ultimately led to his decision to resign early. During his time in office, Witt was always a topic of conversation.

Choice and support

Klose's support in the election campaign came from various political sides, including the SPD, the Greens and of course his predecessor Witt. Interestingly, the election verification committee rejected an objection to the election, which confirmed to Klose that the will of the citizens was clear. With his term in office, which runs until May 31, 2025, he wants to bring a breath of fresh air to the city.

In a quick question round with Nordkurier, in which Klose commented on personal, local and political issues, he proved that he is not only a good speaker, but also a quick thinker. In this format, aimed at obtaining spontaneous and genuine answers, the new mayor was able to show that he is prepared to face the city's challenges.

Current developments in Neubrandenburg

As the city prepared for a new course under Klose, there is also other exciting news. In Greifswald, Toni Kroos is awarded the State Order of Merit, which fuels the anticipation of football fans in the region. A traffic incident in the direction of Hamburg was also in the news, in which a driver lost control of his tractor-trailer and rescue work became necessary. Despite all these issues, Neubrandenburg, with Klose at the helm, remains the focus of political discussions.

It remains to be seen how Klose will tackle the challenges that come with his new position. One thing is certain, however: the controversy over rainbow flags and the need for open and constructive political discussion are issues that will no longer be able to be avoided under his leadership.
