20 years of brick architecture: Congress in Wismar celebrates tradition and future!
On August 28, 2025, Wismar will become the center of brick architecture when the 20th international congress on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the European center of brick architecture takes place. The event is organized by the World Heritage and Hanseatic cities of Wismar, Stralsund, Lübeck and Rostock as well as the German Foundation for Monument Protection and attracts experts from all areas of brick architecture to Northern Germany.
The congress will be held in the historic Georgenkirche in Wismar and aims to focus on the cultural heritage and materiality of brick. Speakers from Poland, Sweden, Latvia, Great Britain, Spain and Germany will take part. With topics revolving around brick architecture in the cultural and architectural history of Northern Europe, the event promises to offer a varied and informative program.
A comprehensive program
Participants can look forward to a variety of lectures, including two keynote speeches and a panel discussion on the materiality of brick. A central topic will be the inventory of traditional brick buildings and their modern applications. The aim is to highlight both the wealth and diversity of brick building in Europe and at the same time take a look at sustainable perspectives, such as further information betrayed.
The intermunicipal congress not only has a high scientific value, but is also recognized as a further training event by the Chamber of Engineers and the Chamber of Architects. This gives participants the opportunity to collect valuable training points. The organizers of the congress strive to create a network of professionals to promote exchange and collaboration in the art of brick architecture.
A long tradition
The founding idea of the brick center comes from the former chairman of the board of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, Prof. Dr. Gottfried Kiesow, back. He believed that brick, as a traditional building material, played a central role in European architectural history. Under the motto “Research and preservation of brick as a material,” the congress will emphasize the value and importance of this building material, which seems to last for generations.
Wismar and the other Hanseatic cities are not only known for their brick architecture, but are also places where exchanges about monument preservation, building research and new technological developments flourish. It is noteworthy that articles were written by a wide variety of associations and initiatives that are also involved in organizing the congress. This ensures that contributions are presented from a wide variety of perspectives.
Those interested also have the opportunity to make donations to support the congress and the documentation. The IBAN for donations is DE 85 1405 1000 1006 0292 02 and the BIC is NOLADE21WIS. This not only supports the event itself, but also ongoing research and preservation of cultural heritage.
