Demolition of the Wendorf daycare center: Wismar is planning a sustainable new building!

In Wismar, an old daycare center is currently being demolished to make room for a modern new building. The demolition of the “Seebad Wendorf” daycare center, which had been in operation since 1968, began in July 2023. Harmful substances were discovered in the building as early as 2016, but there was never a health risk. The Perspective Wismar gGmbH is planning to build a new modern daycare center on the property that will meet the needs of today's children.

The city also celebrates the “Stadtspatzen” daycare center, which opened in 2019. The building impresses with its ecological timber frame construction with a total area of 2,533 m² and is designed in an L-shape with three floors. The architects Cindy Kruske and Christian Meißner from Freiort Architekten not only paid attention to sustainability during construction, but also to flexible usage options that meet the needs of a modern educational facility. The project was supported by the Lernwert gGmbH as well as Hochbau Krentz and Müller as investors.

Innovative construction and insulation

Particular attention was paid to the insulation. The “Stadtspatzen” daycare center relies on pioneering blown-in insulation with mineral wool. This process significantly reduces the financial and time expenditure for insulation. After blowing in, the insulation is sealed with the wooden frame so that it is airtight and free of thermal bridges. The outside of the building is clad with a permeable wood material, while the interior is equipped with profiled timber and plasterboard. This construction method ensures a high level of sound and fire protection and meets the strict requirements for energy efficiency. The annual primary energy requirement is only 72 kWh/(m²a) and highlights the daycare center, for example, in the Holzbauplus Prize of the Year 2020 Energy experts report.

With a creative spatial concept and an educational philosophy that promotes child-friendly education for sustainable development, the daycare center is a real model for modern educational institutions. Here children should grow up in an appealing and educational environment that can meet both the social and ecological challenges of the future.

Current developments in Wismar

But it's not just in the construction sector that a lot is happening in Wismar. Egger Holzwerkstoffe has opened a new factory canteen called “Ankerplatz”, which involved an investment of 2.2 million euros. Here employees can enjoy fresh meals after having to make do with a makeshift container for many years.

There was recently an incident at the Goethe School when a student sprayed irritant gas. The fire department and emergency services were called and two students required medical treatment. The incident shows that not everything runs smoothly in educational institutions and that the safety of children must always come first.

A section of the A14 motorway was completely closed due to heat damage. Asphalt deformations require immediate repairs, causing significant traffic delays. In particular, the route between the Schwerin motorway junction and the Schwerin-Nord junction will initially remain closed until July 5th.

Overall, Wismar remains a city in transition, both in terms of the educational landscape and the infrastructure. The developments of the last few months show that a breath of fresh air is blowing here - and citizens can be excited to see what further steps the city will take in the coming period.
