Roof structure fire in Schönberg: seriously injured and evacuated neighbors!
On July 20, 2025, at around 2:45 p.m. there was a devastating roof structure fire in an apartment building in Schönberg, Northwest Mecklenburg district. As Die Zeit reports, the fire broke out in an attic apartment and led to heavy smoke, which also endangered residents from neighboring houses.
During the first operations, the consequences of the fire became dramatic: a 55-year-old man who lived in the affected apartment sustained serious injuries and had to be taken to the Lübeck University Hospital. However, two other residents, a 38-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man, only suffered minor injuries. All three people were treated for suspected smoke intoxication. A total of around 55 firefighters and 14 rescue services were on duty, supported by officers from the Grevesmühlen police station.
Protective measures and evacuation
For the safety of residents, the neighboring houses were evacuated as a precaution, but they were able to quickly return to their apartments after the extinguishing work was completed. Nevertheless, the affected apartments - including the attic apartment and five other units - are uninhabitable for the time being. The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Police stated that the scene of the fire was confiscated to determine the cause of the fire.
The estimated damage is around 300,000 euros, which is causing great concern for the affected residents. The exact origin of the fire is currently unclear and the investigation is in full swing. Both the criminal police and fire investigators are now called upon to shed light on the matter and clarify the background to the incident.
In the meantime, those affected are in a state of shock. The seriously injured 55-year-old and his neighbors are particularly hoping for a quick clarification of the situation and early help for their uninhabitable apartments. According to reports, it is important that the affected residents also receive psychological support in order to process the traumatic experiences.
The incident will remain a topic of conversation in the region for many days to come. The fire brigade and police have urged people to pay attention to safety precautions and fire protection in apartment buildings in order to prevent future tragedies of this kind.
