The smallest holiday home in the world: A magnet for holidaymakers in Rieps!
A very special gem has opened its doors in tranquil Rieps, in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg. The smallest holiday home in the world, a former transformer tower, has since attracted more visitors than its operators Andreas Moos and Marita Hannemann-Moos had originally expected. Since opening in March 2025, the mini holiday home with an area of just 11 square meters has become a real magnet, where the highest demands are met in the smallest of spaces.
The operators originally expected around five overnight stays per month. But on the contrary: bookings via platforms such as Airbnb not only exceeded these expectations, but the small house even received a top rating of 5.0 points. Guests from Germany, Belgium, Great Britain and Switzerland rave about the “small but extremely fine” retreat. Some have even bought overnight vouchers to make friends happy. The majority of guests are over 40 years old, a surprise for the operators.
The transformer tower – an extraordinary accommodation
The transformer tower, which the couple purchased in 2020 for just 1.19 euros - a real bargain - was transformed into a modern holiday home in a comprehensive renovation. In this extraordinary building, guests can find everything they need for a comfortable stay: from the bathroom with underfloor heating and shower on the ground floor to the cozy kitchen-living room on the upper floor, equipped with a fold-out couch, table and two chairs. There are also two bay windows that have glazed winter gardens and offer a view of the starry sky.
The renovation cost a total of around 140,000 euros, of which 53,000 euros came from funding. The operators had expected 90,000 euros, which illustrates the amount of costs. With a price of 110 euros per night, the tastefully furnished holiday home is a lucrative option in the region.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – the number one holiday home country
Rieps may be small with its 370 inhabitants, but in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the chances of asserting oneself in the holiday home landscape are good. Holiday home tourism in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania generates over 4.8 billion euros annually and boasts 52 million overnight stays per year. There are almost 100,000 holiday homes and apartments, and 90% of them are privately rented. This means the market is much larger than previously assumed, and the region is a popular destination for holidaymakers looking for nature and relaxation. Almost 43 million overnight stays take place in private accommodation, which is often not recorded statistically.
So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience in exceptional accommodation, you should consider staying in the smallest holiday home in the world. The positive feedback and impressive figures prove that Rieps occupies a remarkable place on the holiday home market map.
The operators are pleased with the success of the small holiday home and are also offering two additional holiday apartments in a converted village school. The little house has definitely won its place in the hearts of holidaymakers and shows that great things can be achieved even in the smallest of spaces. Maybe the transformer tower will be allowed in soon Guinness Book of Records stand!
No wonder that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is considered the number one holiday home country in Germany - vacation is twice as much fun here!
