Gadebusch in the running frenzy: Karl-August-Baum-Demenenllauf on July 13th!
In Gadebusch there is a very special event: On Sunday, July 13, 2025, the premiere of the Karl-August-Baum-Demenflauf will take place. This is an event that will not only present top sporting performance, but is also dedicated to the memory of an extraordinary person. Karl-August Baum was a leading athletics coach for many years and became honorary citizen of his hometown in 2023 at the age of 88. The run is accompanied by none other than Jürgen Schult, the famous discus throwing world champion from 1987 and Olympic champion of 1988, as patron how Nordkurier reported.
Over 230 participants from Gadebusch and other cities such as Berlin, Hamburg and Warnemünde have already registered, and the number could still increase. The anticipation is noticeable: the sports enthusiasts prepared intensively for the event in the weeks earlier, some even started running again. Prominent sports greats are also expected, including Gerd Wessig, Olympic champion in the high jump in 1980, and Siegfried Stark, who won a bronze medal in the decathlon in 1978
an event for a good cause
The Karl-August-Baum-Demenenlauf is not only a sporty highlight, but also has a social purpose. The event is organized by the children's sports group "Small Bandits" and all income flow into a children's project in Gadebusch. To take part in it, everyone interested can register until the event day. The start number edition opens on July 13th to 1p.
The participants expect a variety of running offers: from 1,000-meter run for children to 5 and 10 kilometers for young people and adults as well as 5 and 10 kilometers of Nordic walking. It will be particularly exciting for the fastest runners of the 10-kilometer run, because you can look forward to symbolic relay rods from Leonide Baum, who won bronze at the florida World Cup in Florida.
traffic disruptions inevitable
If you go to Gadebusch this Sunday, you should expect traffic disabilities from 12 noon. Many roads have to be blocked for the run, including some parking spaces. There will be no shortage of around 50 volunteers who actively help, so that the event can run smoothly.
While athletics in Germany has a long history that goes back to the 19th century and is characterized by significant achievements, the removal of the memory shows that sport still lives and develops further. This sport, which has been an integral part of the Olympic Games since 1896, has also created a strong community in Gadebusch, which is strongly supported by such events. The memory of Karl-August Baum is kept alive by the run and shows how important it is to maintain memories and at the same time to assume social responsibility.
