ATM attacked in Timmendorf: 10,000 euros in damage!

On the night of July 16th to 17th there was a brazen attack on an ATM in Timmendorf on the island of Poel. Unknown perpetrators tried to tear the device from its anchorage on Tau’n Lüchttorm Street, near the bus turning loop and a souvenir shop. The Wismar police received several tips about the damaged machine around 7 a.m. on Thursday morning, such as: Baltic Sea newspaper reported. The material damage caused is estimated at around 10,000 euros. It is currently unclear whether the perpetrators were able to access the cash.

The criminal police immediately started investigating. Not only were traces secured, but residents were also interviewed to obtain possible information about the perpetrators. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact the Wismar police on 03841-2030 or any police station.

Current situation with ATM explosions in Germany

This incident on the island of Poel is part of a worrying development. In North Rhine-Westphalia, where attacks on ATMs are a strategic focus, a total of 153 ATM explosions were recorded in 2023. While this represents a decrease compared to 2022, the overall numbers remain alarmingly high, as the Police NRW determines.

The method used by the perpetrators has increasingly changed. Solid explosives are often used and escapes are carried out using high-powered vehicles. Such incidents not only cause property damage amounting to millions, but also endanger the lives of bystanders and emergency responders.

In order to address this problem, there are various recommendations for ATM operators, which point to measures such as video surveillance and reducing cash stocks. Intensive cooperation between the police authorities of different countries should help to combat these crimes more effectively.

It is particularly regrettable that such criminal activities take place during the holiday season, when many people want to enjoy their stay without worries. We hope for information from the public so that those responsible for the attack in Timmendorf can be brought to justice quickly.
