In a spectacular operation, the police in Grevesmühlen recently dug up an illegal cannabis plantation in a former bakery. This represents a major blow to drug trafficking in the area. The plantation, which appeared to have been operating for several months, was discovered on Wednesday evening when the building was searched. The officers came across a professional breeding facility and several hundred cannabis plants, which were transported from Gadebusch on Thursday with the support of the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW).
Ostsee-Zeitung reports that a truck and a second vehicle are needed to secure the technical system were. The materials seized included ventilation systems, special lights and insulation material.
New drug discoveries in the region
The search in Grevesmühlen comes just a week after a similar operation in nearby Dassow, where a cannabis plantation was also shut down. In a local barn, officers found around 150 cannabis plants as well as some cannabis that had already been harvested. This is also about gang-related trafficking, as arrest warrants have been issued against three men between the ages of 30 and 55. The 55-year-old was released on conditional terms, while his two accomplices from Lübeck remained in custody
NDR reports that a large amount of cash and cocaine was seized from one of the arrested people. It is still unclear whether there is a connection between the two cases.
The reality of cannabis consumption in Germany
No matter how brutal the police operations may be, the consumption of cannabis remains an explosive issue in Germany. A drug affinity study from 2023 shows that among 12 to 17 year olds, 8.3% have tried cannabis. That number rises to 47.2% among 18- to 25-year-olds. Regular consumption can also be clearly observed at 1.3% of adolescents and 8.0% of young adults
DHS provides additional findings that 34.7% of respondents between 18 and 64 years of age have experience with cannabis. These trends show how deeply rooted consumption is in society and the challenges that arise from it.
The dramatic events in Grevesmühlen and the surrounding area not only raise questions about drug trafficking, but also remind us of how important prevention and educational work is in our society. Given the increase in cannabis use, the discussion about legal alternatives and possible regulatory methods should no longer be postponed.
