Anniversary celebration in Bothmer Castle: An unforgettable celebration!
Bothmer Castle in northwest Mecklenburg, known for its baroque splendor and impressive history, is celebrating two significant anniversaries this year. The impressive castle, built between 1726 and 1732 for Johann Kaspar von Bothmer, has been used as a museum for ten years now. This anniversary is a reason to celebrate, as the castle welcomed over a million visitors during this time; Almost every second person couldn't miss out on the museum's treasures NDR reported.
Despite the glamorous present, the future of the castle was in jeopardy for a long time after the fall of the Wall. A private investor failed when it came to the necessary funds for the renovation. The ensemble was only saved when it was taken over by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which initiated the seven-year restoration of the castle. The result is a popular excursion destination that is not only ideal for relaxing walks in the beautifully landscaped park, but also serves as a backdrop for numerous events.
A weekend full of celebrations
The anniversary of the castle ensemble will be celebrated with a big party on August 24, 2025. A colorful mix of attractions awaits guests on this day, including free entry to the castle museum. Other highlights of the event are the “Living Museum” tours, which take place between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. Special details: Guides in baroque clothing introduce visitors to the history of the castle.
The celebrations are complemented by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival, which is also celebrating its 35th birthday. Another highlight is the Bothmer Open Air on August 23, 2025, which won the renowned violinist María Dueñas and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra for the region. The park opens three hours before the concert for a relaxing picnic, and the castle tour is included in the concert ticket.
The architectural heritage
Architecturally, Bothmer Castle is one of the most impressive buildings of the Baroque period and is considered the pinnacle of Baroque art. Features such as rich ornaments and curved shapes characterize the image. The acoustics of the ballroom are particularly praised and make it a perfect place for concerts. In addition, the baroque wing complex, not a typical castle, but an outstandingly large mansion, is admired by visitors.
The palace complex itself comprises 14 buildings, with 12 built directly next to each other. A special attraction is the historic bowling alley from 1860, which was only reopened in May 2024, which further underlines the charm of the entire ensemble. The magnificent interior design, including a vestibule with a stucco ceiling and a tiled wall made of 500 Dutch tiles, makes Bothmer Castle a special experience for every architecture lover.
In times when the Baroque style is often celebrated as a highlight in architecture, Bothmer Castle remains an outstanding example. The combination of historical significance, cultural diversity and attractive park ensures that this magnificent piece of history in the Klützer Winkel is a true gem that is very popular with locals and tourists alike.
