Shortages in Wismar: There is a lack of apartments, a new care facility opens!
Wismar, the charming Hanseatic city on the Bay of Wismar, is thriving despite certain challenges. With around 43,000 inhabitants, making Wismar the sixth largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the demand for living space is particularly noticeable. The vacancy rate in Wismar Nord is currently just 0.2 percent, which doesn't make the situation any easier for those looking for a home [Ostsee-Zeitung].
In addition to the tense living situation, a new outpatient care service is opening in the region, which is currently caring for 15 patients. The aim is to improve medical treatment, housekeeping and care in the city and the surrounding area. The offer comes at just the right time as many people rely on such services.
Social challenges and developments
The social issues also include the upcoming mayoral election on April 12, 2026, for which three men have already announced their candidacy. Interested voters can submit their nominations until January 27, 2026. Strong civic engagement is also evident in a citizens' initiative that has collected around 2,700 signatures against the construction of wind turbines in the Klützer Winkel. Residents fear negative impacts on the landscape and electricity prices, even though no official planning application has been submitted to date.
The historical context of the city of Wismar is reflected not only in its architecture, which is characterized by brick Gothic, but also in its living traditions. Wismar celebrates an annual “Sweden Celebration”, which commemorates the time when the city was part of the Swedish Empire from 1648 to 1803. This and the fact that Wismar was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002 illustrate the cultural importance of this city.
A look at the residents
The 2022 Census data shows an interesting age structure: around 16% of the population is under 18 years old, while 25% is over 66 years old.
