New rescue station in Rieps: An important step for your safety!
There are signs of renewal in the Northwest Mecklenburg district: Construction of a new rescue station in Rieps officially began on August 15, 2025. Why is this so important? Quite simply: there is an acute supply gap in the region that needs to be closed. A report has determined that Rieps is the best location for this urgently needed facility. The property, which is approximately 1,600 square meters in size, has already been found and the district is taking responsibility for the project as the developer. According to Nordkurier, the new station will be equipped with modern standards, including solid construction, a flat roof, a heat pump, and air conditioning and ventilation systems.
The need for reliable emergency care cannot be denied: As the report shows, quick help and efficient emergency care are crucial. An ambulance will be stationed in Rieps around the clock. This enables a rapid response to medical emergencies such as injuries, poisoning or various illnesses. The trained rescue personnel, equipped with modern medical equipment, determine the time until help is very important for those affected. In the Northwest Mecklenburg region in 2022, in only 39 percent of resuscitation cases, the first rescue device was seen at the emergency scene within eight minutes, which underlines the urgency of the project.
Capacity and training
The operation of the rescue station will be ensured by the German Red Cross (DRK), which will be staffed by two paramedics and a trainee. The training of emergency paramedics is also planned within this framework. These measures are part of a larger plan to improve emergency services in the region. In recent years, the rescue service has continuously developed and is placing new demands on accommodation and organization.
The construction of this new guard is estimated to cost around 1.8 million euros and completion is scheduled for August 2026. In order to bridge the time until the opening, an interim guard was put into operation in Rehna in July. This measure serves to bridge the existing supply gap while the new building is being built.
Emergency service background
But what actually makes an effective rescue service? The rescue service in Germany, as in other countries, functions within the framework of a well-organized system. It offers quick and professional help in medical emergencies. The first structural approaches even emerged in the Napoleonic era, and the first ambulances were introduced as early as 1788. In Germany, however, the exact processes are state law, which results in a variety of models for implementation. Around 67,000 people are active in the German rescue service, which is organized primarily at the local level. In Austria, for example, the rescue service is often operated by organizations such as the Red Cross, which illustrates the internationality of the rescue services, as can also be found from Wikipedia.
With the construction of the new rescue station in Rieps, the district of Northwest Mecklenburg is taking an important step to improve medical care for the population and at the same time respond to the challenges of modern rescue services.
