New youth club for Malchin: City plans to purchase former AWO property!
In Malchin there are great expectations and movements in youth work. The city's young people are clamoring for a new meeting place, and interest in a youth club is high on the wish list. At a meeting in the old waterworks, over 30 young people expressed their ideas for a new location that should be centrally located and close to the school or in the city center in order to organize their leisure activities and events. The existing children's and youth center on Achterstrasse, where primary school students in particular use the premises, is far from covering the needs of older young people. Northern Courier reports on the inadequate contact points that are currently available to young people.
In order to meet the increasing demands, Mayor Axel Müller (CDU) has made an interesting offer. He would like to purchase the former youth club building on Rudolf-Fritz-Straße. This property belonged to the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (Awo) until 2015 and is now for sale because the Awo had to close the club due to a lack of city subsidies. The current owner would not have been able to implement his plans for the building and is ready to implement it. The city has already signaled interest in the purchase and submitted price expectations. However, a final decision has not yet been made.
Diverse offers for young people
The city administration sees the old club building not only as an opportunity for a new youth club, but also as potential for games and gymnastics rooms. This could represent real added value for the young citizens of Malchin who would like to be actively involved in the development of their leisure activities. The commitment of the young people, who like to be involved in city decisions, is remarkable. They would like to be heard in committees and the city council regarding their concerns and ideas for the future design of the youth meeting place.
The existing offer at the KiJu meeting on Achterstrasse also seems to be particularly important. Here, children and young people aged 7 to 16 can experience a variety of activities every day from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This includes homework help, creative activities such as sewing and crafts as well as collaborations with Mediatop NB for media courses. The meeting point proves to be a valuable contact point, but does not offer the desired opportunities for older young people. Social work confirms that support from local providers is important to promote and expand such offers.
Youth centers in general
The importance of youth centers for the development of young people cannot be overestimated. They not only offer a space for leisure activities, but also for personal and social development. Leisure activities, advisory services and integration projects are just some of the attractive options on offer there. School list emphasizes how important it is that these centers are equipped with qualified specialist staff to provide young people with support.
The discussion about the future of a new youth club will continue after the summer holidays, when the children and youth advisory board also resumes its work. It remains to be hoped that the wishes of the young people will be heard and that a suitable place for all young people will soon be created in Malchin.
