New at GHG: 26 million euros for modernization and St. Martin's Market!

The city of Wismar is facing exciting changes: work to modernize and expand the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium (GHG) will begin in November. Wismar's oldest school, which was built between 1903 and 1905 based on designs by the architect Johann Busch, will be the focus of construction work for the next three years. The investment sum of over 26 million euros shows how serious the city is about the renovation. Baltic Sea newspaper reports that the school has been empty since September 2024 to make room for the extensive demolition and pollution remediation work.

The GHG has an eventful history: school operations began in 1905 and experienced numerous interruptions during the First and Second World Wars. In the post-war period, the number of students grew rapidly, and around 1949 the boys' elementary school was renamed the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Schule. A true piece of Wismar that will now enter a new phase of its history! The GHG website provides interesting insights into the long tradition of this educational institution.

New home for the district music school

While the GHG is being modernized, the Nordwestmecklenburg District Music School has to temporarily move. She will be moving into a container building because the current property is in serious need of renovation. The renovation costs could add up to 20 million euros, meaning the school will probably not return to its new premises until the 2027/28 school year. This solution may be temporary, but it shows that the music school is determined to continue to keep up with the times.

A wide range of options in Wismar

In addition, the “Team 3” therapy center will be the first tenant to open on October 15th in the renovated double-gabled house at Dankwartstrasse 31. This means that the city is not only active in the area of education, but also takes care of the health concerns of its citizens.

Another highlight for Wismar residents is the upcoming Martinsmarkt, which will take place from October 17th to 19th in the market hall at the Old Harbor. Admission is free, and local artisans and vendors showcase their best products. There is also fun and games for the little visitors with creative crafts.

Increasing student numbers

Interest is booming on the university side: around 1,500 new students enrolled for the winter semester 25/26, which corresponds to an increase of 25 percent compared to the previous year. The Master's program in International Management is particularly popular, with 123 first-year students fighting for a place. The subject of business psychology has been added with 62 registrations, which further underlines the educational location.

So Wismar has an exciting time ahead of it! The combination of modernization, new offerings and the St. Martin's Market will attract both locals and visitors and shows that the city is on the move.
