It will soon be festive again in Wismar, as the Christmas market opens its doors on Monday, November 24th and runs until December 22nd. The Ostsee-Zeitung reportsthat a comprehensive security concept was developed by the organizers, police, fire brigade and the city of Wismar to protect visitors from possible dangers, especially from vehicle attacks. Numerous measures are taken to ensure the safety of guests. There will be a reinforced access closure, equipped with concrete blocks and mobile barriers. The south side of the market square remains closed throughout and is secured by chained concrete blocks.

Innovative security measures

The mobile barriers in the southern area are manned by staff so that the police are present and available at all times. Arranging rides at the edge of the event area also acts as a physical barrier and pedestrians can only enter the Christmas market from other sides. A ban on glass bottles will also be introduced on site to further increase safety.

It is particularly noteworthy that these measures were expanded after the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market last year. In addition to protection against acts of violence, the security concept also pays attention to fire protection, escape routes and weather-related dangers. The police have prepared well for the events and will be available to citizens on the days of the event.
