Wismar fears heavy rain: State Thanksgiving Festival gets off to a bumpy start!
The 2025 State Harvest Festival, a highlight in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's festival calendar, only has a cloudy opening due to unstable weather. Various celebrations are planned in Wismar and on the island of Poel on October 4th and 5th. Unfortunately, heavy rain led to the first cancellations of program items. The musical entertainment at the Wismar town hall was canceled until 3 p.m. However, the weather is expected to improve from 3 p.m., so the musical program may still be able to start, reports Baltic Sea newspaper.
To mark the festivities, the Harvest Crown will arrive at the Old Harbor in Wismar around 8 p.m. after departing from the island of Poel. A large parade with decorated vehicles is on the program for Sunday. The organizers are hoping for a new record in the number of participants despite the capricious weather. The preparations for the festival took over a year and were supported by District Administrator Tino Schomann (CDU) and Mayor Gabriele Richter NDR highlights.
A colorful program
Over the weekend, most events take place on Saturday on the island of Poel. These include, among other things, the Farmers' Olympics, a chicken bingo and a traditional potato peeling competition. The finale is a festive farmers' ball. On Sunday, however, the focus is on the Wismar market square, where a stage program is also planned. Both holidays are preceded by devotions and thanksgiving services, which should accompany the celebrations and attract additional visitors.
Overall, the goal of the parade on Sunday will be to set a new record for the longest parade in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania; the aim is to be at least 800 meters and 80 floats. With this tradition, the organizers remind people of the importance of such festivals for the region and agriculture, which has been cultivated for over 1000 years Jovrita explained.
Practical information
The organizers recommend using public transport to get there, as the parking lot around the market square will be closed from Friday. However, regular parking spaces are available at the harbor and train station. A shuttle bus will be set up between Wismar, Niendorf and Timmendorf Strand on both days, and there will be traffic restrictions on Sunday between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. due to the parade.
Harvest festivals such as the State Thanksgiving Festival are not only an expression of gratitude for the harvest, but also offer a wonderful opportunity to get to know regional agriculture better and experience how it is becoming increasingly fashionable. Young people and families are also discovering more and more the sociability and awareness of sustainable agriculture that such celebrations promote.
