Wismar inspires: Coupon book celebrates record sales!

In the Hanseatic city of Wismar, the heart of tradition beats with the current edition of the “WISMARplus” coupon booklet for 2025. This popular publication is available both in the tourist information office and in local hotels. Mayor Thomas Beyer (SPD) enthusiastically reported around 800 sales this year, which is a new record. Deputy Mayor Michael Berkhahn (CDU) describes the situation as “a knot has broken” – a clear sign that the brochure has been accepted by citizens and visitors. The citizens also voted to continue the magazine, which is now in its eleventh round.

The latest edition brings with it some new features, including a price increase from 12 to 15 euros. This measure was deemed necessary to take account of rising admission prices, particularly for churches. But despite the increase, the voucher book still enables significant savings when buying tickets. For example, visitors to the Schabbell Museum can save 3 euros, while theater goers can look forward to a 5 euro discount. There are also cheaper offers for boat trips, city tours and visits to the zoo. Particularly noteworthy is the discount of up to 33 percent for NDR concerts in the St. Georg Church.

Wismar – A historic Hanseatic city

With around 43,000 inhabitants, Wismar is the sixth largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is picturesquely located on the Wismar Bay of the Baltic Sea. Founded in 1226, the charming town was an important trading center and joined the Hanseatic League in 1259. Wismar was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, known for its impressive brick Gothic architecture and maritime history. The striking churches include St. George, St. Nicholas and St. Mary's Church, all of which breathe history and shape the city.

Wismar has also experienced a turbulent history, from Swedish control in the 17th century to its time as part of East Germany after World War II. In recent decades, much has been done to restore the city and increase its attractiveness. Nowadays, Wismar attracts numerous visitors who want to explore the unique mix of history and culture.

Current developments

A new partner in the coupon booklet is Gamehl Castle, which is located outside the city area. It is also pointed out at an early stage that after the tax rates are increased from 2026, the statutes will be reviewed in order to adapt to the changes by the state or federal government. What is particularly pleasing is that an area of almost two hectares is considered to have been completely renovated, but unfortunately no further funding can be applied for.

These developments show that Wismar is on the way to becoming more attractive for both locals and guests. With its charming flair, historical sights and now also the tried and tested coupon book that many count on, the Hanseatic city remains a popular destination on the Baltic Sea.

Visitors to Wismar are also strongly recommended to explore the historic market square, where local markets and events often take place. The town hall, the Wismar City Museum and the unique churches are further points of contact that bring the city's maritime history and architectural highlights to life.

Whether for a day trip or a longer stay, Wismar offers something for everyone - a real insider tip on the Baltic Sea!
