Wismar is looking for suggestions for a citizen medal and sports badge!
The Citizens' Medal and Sports Plaque will once again be awarded in the Hanseatic city of Wismar - a solemn occasion that will be celebrated on November 6, 2025. To recognize these awards, the city of Wismar is calling on citizens to submit suggestions for the award of the Citizens' Medal. The medal is awarded for special achievements in the areas of culture, business or social affairs, and the city emphasizes that proposals must be submitted in writing with a detailed justification. The deadline for these proposals is January 13th.
But what makes the Citizens Medal so special? This award honors citizens who have distinguished themselves in public, social or cultural areas. The sports plaque is also awarded in this context and recognizes the achievements of athletes, trainers and organizers who have made outstanding contributions to sport in Wismar.
The history of honorary awards
Honorary citizenship is the highest honor of the city of Wismar and while the city's citizens are still active today, the list of honorary citizens is extensive. The prominent names include Otto von Bismarck, who received this honor in 1895, and Dr. Rosemarie Wilcken, who was mayor from 1990 to 2010. The tradition of honors shows how important involvement in the city's history is and represents a bridge between the past and the future. Other important honors include the Ring of Honor, which is awarded for special achievements in science, culture and society, and the Citizens' Medal, which was awarded to Dieter Jahn and Reinhart Kny, for example.
The city of Wismar encourages all citizens to submit active suggestions. What is needed are people who have distinguished themselves through commitment and performance. These awards are intended to highlight the valuable work of individuals and inspire others to also contribute to the community.
The sports badge – recognition for sport
What would Wismar be without the sporting successes of its citizens? The sports plaque recognizes outstanding achievements in sport and previous holders such as Beatrice Reichel from TSG Wismar Handball and Walter Schuldt, President of PSV Wismar, have set standards with their contributions. The award of the sports plaque is also a call to all clubs and athletes who would like to highlight their achievements and commitment to the community.
For everyone who has had a taste: In order for the honors to continue, it is important that suggestions are submitted by January 13th. It's the perfect opportunity to recognize local people and strengthen the community.
So if you know someone who deserves recognition for their contributions to culture, sport or society, don't hesitate and submit your suggestion!
