On Friday evening it's time to cast off again in Grevesmühlen! The eagerly awaited twentieth season of the popular pirate open air is starting and promises lots of adventure and thrills. The play “Capt’n Flint – The Pact with the Devil” will be performed on an impressive total area of over 9,000 m² and will be on the program a total of 68 times until September 6, 2025. The story of Captain Flint, a character from Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island", attracts numerous visitors every year. There is space for up to 3,400 spectators who can look forward to daring fencing matches, special effects and breathtaking stunts. According to NDR, the performance also includes the use of real muzzle-loading weapons and cannons.
Not only the backdrop but also the entire ensemble is carefully put together for the performances. More than 60 actors are involved in the gripping pirate story. “Power, gold, friendship and love” are the themes that run through the production and are designed to be exciting for all age groups, especially families. Director Peter Venzmer, who has looked after the Pirate Open Air since its beginnings, has announced his return this season. However, after the current season in September, he draws his conclusions and speaks of a “slow handing over of responsibility”. Venzmer and his crew have already caused a stir around the world, including at Disneyland and at folk festivals such as Oktoberfest.
Unique special effects and stunts
A highlight of this year's season are the impressive effects, including a volcano with twelve-meter-high fire columns and a spectacular fire on the water. These are monitored by an assessor to ensure that the volume remains within an appropriate level for residents and spectators. In recent years there have been repeated discussions about the volume of action theater, but an improvement in the noise situation is planned for 2025.
