Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Deutschland - What's going on with the partridges in Germany? In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there is currently little positive for this strongly endangered species. According to a report from the NDR, which refers to monitoring results from recent years, it can be seen that the existence of the vineyards in the region does not recover. The annual surveys since 2017, which are coordinated by the umbrella organization of German Avifaunists, indicate a dramatic decline. Last year the number was estimated to be around 50,000 breeding pairs nationwide, with alarming values of only 0.68 vineyards per 100 hectares during the surveys in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Surprisingly, despite intensive efforts, there are hardly any answers to these animals, which makes it even more difficult.
The situation is anything but rosy. Every year, the vineyards are counted in over 200 areas, with volunteers from the end of February to the end of March to hunt for the sounding voices of the birds. So far, modern methods, such as the use of speakers, have not yet achieved the desired success. According to experts, the lack of habitat is the main cause of shrinking the inventory. Rebhühner need small -scale landscapes with hedges and seed -rich areas that are more and more threatened by intensive agriculture.

If you look beyond the national borders, the extent of the problem becomes even clearer. Europe -wide, the existence of the partridge has decreased by a whopping 94 percent since 1980. It is alarming that this species is classified as "very endangered" in the red list of breeding birds in Germany. The project "Save vineyards - promote diversity!" has therefore set itself the goal of analyzing knowledge about the partridge protection and networking actors. With a total volume of 896,000 euros, has been working on solutions since 01.04.2021 to 31.03.2023 in order to counteract the further falling biodiversity in agricultural landscapes.- project partners include the German Association for Landscape Care and the Georg August University Göttingen.
