Rich harvest in Ueckermünde: plums and apples released for snacking!

It is currently harvest time in Ueckermünde-Ost: the colorful fruits in the orchard there are ripe and invite you to taste them. Mayor Jürgen Kliewe encouraged citizens to snack on the juicy apples and plums, including egg plums and Renekloden, as they please. The meadow is a real feast for all fruit lovers - snacking is not only permitted, but expressly encouraged, as long as the entire tree is not harvested.

The orchard, which was created behind the demolished residential restaurant “Waterkant” on W.-Seelenbinder-Straße, is a joint project and part of an initiative to create a “green lung” on formerly used building land in the region. Despite the sandy soil, which makes the growth of the trees challenging, the plants have developed splendidly. In recent years, both the birch avenue and the orchard have grown into a floral splendor that is particularly showing its fruit at harvest time.

Variety of fruits and their meaning

The orchard not only offers a rich selection of fruit, including oaks, birches, chestnuts and various fruit trees, but also contributes significantly to the region's biodiversity. These cultural landscapes are man-made areas where tall fruit trees are combined with meadows and garden areas. Loud heimischelandwirtschaft.de Germany is estimated to have around 300,000 hectares of orchards. These areas are crucial for the preservation of biodiversity as they provide habitats for numerous insects, reptiles and birds and also provide protection for endangered species such as wild bees.

The types of fruit can be harvested directly from the tree and are ideal for direct consumption or for making delicious juices, jam, jelly and other delicacies. The orchards require regular maintenance as they suffer from threats such as climate change and economic challenges.

A concern for the future

The city administration is aware of the ecological importance of these areas and therefore actively promotes the preservation and care of the orchards. In times when agriculture is in jeopardy, individual contributions to protecting these valuable cultural landscapes are of great importance. You can make an important contribution by purchasing regional orchards or sponsoring trees.

The current harvest times not only offer an opportunity to enjoy the tasty fruits, but also to develop an awareness of the important role of orchards in our cultural landscape. Mayor Kliewe calls on people not only to enjoy the impressive diversity of nature, but also to protect and preserve it.
