Eight attackers attacked a 31-year-old in Rostock – police are investigating!

A 31-year-old man was brutally attacked by a group of around eight people in Rostock's Groß Klein district on Monday evening. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. near the Klenow Gate, where the victim, a German-Russian citizen, was suddenly attacked after a brief conversation with the group members. During the attack, the attackers held an oblong object in their hands with which they hit the man in the head, reports Borken newspaper.

After the brutal attack, the group of perpetrators fled the scene, while the injured victim was immediately taken to the Südstadtklinikum. Fortunately, the 31-year-old was able to be released that same evening. The criminal police have already launched an investigation into attempted murder. Little is known about the identity and motives of the perpetrators, which is why the police are asking for information from the public, which can be reported to the Rostock-Lichtenhagen police station or via the online watchdog of the M-V state police.

A worrying trend

Such acts of violence are comparatively rare in Germany, but they have a significant impact on the population's sense of security. Like an analysis of Statista shows, violent crimes account for less than 4% of all crimes recorded by the police, but the increasing numbers in recent years, especially after the low point during the corona pandemic, raise questions.

More than 217,000 violent crimes were recorded in 2024 - the highest number in 17 years. Around 260,000 people are victims of violence every year, and cases of violence against emergency workers have also increased sharply. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) cites economic uncertainty and psychological stress as possible causes for this development.

Clarification of the suspects

Police are trying to identify the perpetrators of the attack on the 31-year-old. Despite the general challenge of solving acts of violence - in 2024 this was achieved in around 75% of cases - the hope is that this incident can also be solved quickly. The sense of security of citizens in Rostock, as in other cities, is severely affected by such incidents.

The incident in Rostock reminds us of the need to be vigilant and advocate for our own safety and that of those around us. Society is called upon to find common ways to curb violence in our cities and address the causes.
