Augsburg leads the lucky ranking 2025-Munich falls off!

Rostock, Deutschland - In Germany there is a city that wears the warmest smile: Augsburg. According to the latest “Glücksatlas” of the southern German class lottery (SKL), the inhabitants of this city feel happiest. Augsburg took fourth place in the ranking of the 40 largest German cities that have over 200,000 inhabitants. The situation is quite different for the Bavarian metropolis of Munich, which slipped to 27th place and thus lost three places compared to the previous year. But the urban ranking shows more than just numbers - it reflects life satisfaction and the different conditions in the cities.

What makes people in Augsburg so satisfied? According to the survey, smaller and student -shaped cities such as Augsburg and Münster have a decisive advantage: they not only offer a lot of green, but also good medical care and a young, dynamic environment. A total of 23,468 people in the 40 largest cities were interviewed for the study between January 2022 and April 2025. The surveys show a positive trend in life satisfaction, something that the Corona period also favors rather because this data was included.

The ranking of the happiest cities

The top ten of life satisfaction based on a points system from 0 to 10, look as follows:

  • Kassel (7.44 points) - the happiest city
  • Augsburg (7.33 points)
  • aachen (7.33 points)
  • Münster (7.24 points)
  • Düsseldorf (7.36 points)
  • Hamburg (7.21 points)
  • Krefeld (7.39 points)
  • Erfurt (7.27 points)
  • Mönchengladbach (7.22 points)
  • Duisburg (7.20 points)

On the other hand, there are cities like Rostock, which form the bottom with a life satisfaction of only 6.08 points. This shows that larger cities tend to face challenges when it comes to life satisfaction. Large cities like Frankfurt am Main and Berlin are in the lower half of the table with places 35 and 37.

The interaction of quality of life and life satisfaction

But what does that mean for life in a city? Bernd Raffelhüschen from the University of Freiburg, which was involved in the study, explains that satisfaction depends heavily on the distribution of living conditions. While the feelings of happiness in cities with a high quality of life often fail, it is the family and safe environments that provide real happiness. This shows that prosperity and income are not the key to happiness, but rather a good cooperation and living conditions.

Compared to the quality of life, which is based on over 50 indicators such as living situation, demography and environmental quality, the subjective life satisfaction, which is given by the respondents. It is therefore not surprising that Karlsruhe is at the top of the quality of life ranking, but only ends up in number 38 in terms of life satisfaction. This discrepancy makes it clear that a high standard of living does not automatically mean happiness. In cities like Krefeld, where the quality of life is lower, people still feel happier.

Finally, the current city clerk shows that the best chances for a satisfied life are in smaller cities. This raises the question: What can larger cities do to improve in this ranking? It remains exciting how the satisfaction of the Germans will develop in the coming years.
