Hansa Rostock is threatened with consequences: last chance before the floodlights say goodbye!

A decisive moment is impending in Rostock: On Wednesday, September 17th, at 7 p.m., Hansa Rostock will play against TSV 1860 Munich, and it will be the last game for the traditional floodlight masts of the Ostseestadion. These masts, which have been in service since 1970 and are an impressive 56 meters high and weigh 34 tonnes, will be demolished after the home game as their operating license expires at the end of the year. Meanwhile, the fans are keeping their fingers crossed for a positive result, as Hansa only has six points in the first five games and is fighting against a false start to the season.

The situation is tense: Hansa coach Daniel Brinkmann is putting pressure on and demanding that his team act more courageously, especially on offense. “Back passes are forbidden from now on,” the coach announced and appealed for more aggressiveness. The team's defensive performance has been okay so far, but there are huge problems offensively. Brinkmann takes responsibility for the previous missteps and announces personnel changes if the necessary playing style adjustments are not implemented. He demands an identity in the game, aggressive pressing and better work on the second balls. In comparison, TSV 1860 Munich is praised as a strong candidate for promotion, which only increases the challenge for Hansa.

An emotional farewell

The game will not only be a sporting event, but also an emotional farewell to the old floodlight masts. After the final whistle, all fans are invited to remain in their seats to witness the farewell. This special campaign illustrates the close connection between Hansa Rostock and the traditional masts. While they are being demolished, the new floodlight system will already be in the pipeline, which is to be renovated at a cost of around three million euros.

In order to secure financing for the faithful replica of the masts, a charity game was recently held. This attracted 20,000 spectators and numerous celebrities, including former national player Stefan Beinlich and the musician Marteria. Beinlich described the atmosphere as “like a school reunion,” which underlines the deep connection the former players have with the club. The vast majority of members had already voted in favor of replicating the masts in 2019, which shows how important this landmark is to fans.

On Wednesday it will be seen whether Hansa Rostock can not only master the big task against the Lions from Munich, but also give the old masts a fitting farewell. Can they get everything together? The coming days will be crucial for the future of this traditional football team.
