Cruise boom: Rostock benefits from summer tourism!

Summer has finally begun and with it comes the peak season for the cruise industry in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Thousands of holidaymakers set sail from Warnemünde, which plays into the hands of the local industry. How Baltic Sea newspaper reports, cruise tourism brings around half a billion euros to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania every year. Highlights are the 167 calls in Rostock, 127 in Stralsund and 8 in Wismar.

The state's economics minister, Wolfgang Blank, emphasizes that the industry has recovered from the effects of the corona pandemic. This year, around 500,000 cruise passengers are expected in Rostock. “Cruises are often the first contact that many guests have with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and often lead to further visits,” say experts. Each attempt has a positive impact on the hotel, catering and service sectors, underpinning that the industry is thriving and becoming a real piece of the pie for the local economy.

Economic impacts and challenges

The cruise industry creates around 2,800 full-time jobs in northeast Germany, which shows how important this sector of the economy is. Northern Courier reports on a study that surveyed 45 companies about the economic impact of cruise tourism. Attention is drawn to the challenges that come with meeting environmental regulations and reducing energy costs.

Critics also warn about the environmental consequences of cruises, particularly due to pollutant emissions from diesel engines. Nevertheless, there is hope: Newer ships are increasingly relying on less harmful liquefied natural gas, which is more environmentally friendly.

Current developments and events

The barbecue events on the Haedge Peninsula, organized by Karsten Falkenhayn, also invite you to strengthen the community. The next barbecue event is planned for around three to four weeks. A friendly opportunity to get together and enjoy the beautiful summer evenings.
