Truck driver saves lives: Inferno on A20 near Rostock successfully stopped!
Last Monday morning, July 14, 2025, a dramatic event on the A20 near Rostock caused a stir. A semi-trailer truck suddenly caught fire when the 48-year-old driver heard a bang and was able to quickly swerve onto the hard shoulder. Fortunately, he managed to disconnect the tractor from the burning semi-trailer before it completely burst into flames. The fire department was quickly on site and extinguished the fire, but the motorway between the Rostock intersection and the Rostock-Südstadt exit in the direction of Lübeck remained closed for about an hour. The estimated damage is at least 40,000 euros, although the semi-trailer was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Luckily, both the driver and his passenger were uninjured. The recovery of the burned-out Losbum is still planned for Monday, which may result in short-term disruptions for drivers, as svz.de reports.
But truck fires have not only occurred recently on the A20. Late on Sunday evening, July 13th, another truck fire broke out between the Strasburg and Friedland junctions. The 57-year-old driver noticed smoke and flames coming from his window-laden trailer around 11:30 p.m. and was able to uncouple the trailer in time. The vehicle was parked on the hard shoulder before the driver ran to safety. In this case, the highway was closed in both directions and firefighters had a difficult time getting the fire under control. The damage is estimated at around 75,000 euros. Here too, the driver remained uninjured, but the clean-up work in the direction of Lübeck had to be continued early on Monday morning due to the rescue work. The cause of the fire remains unclear, which is discussed in detail in a report from nordkurier.de.
Warnings of repeated truck fires
The incidents have once again brought ADAC Truckservice's warnings into focus. Last week there were two more truck fires on the A2 near Potsdam, fortunately without any injuries. One of the causes of the fire was a punctured tire, which caused a burning tractor-trailer to stall on the shoulder, causing a following truck to be involved in a serious accident. The ADAC warns that common causes of fire are overheated tires, stuck brakes or defective wheel bearings. The organization urges transport companies not to neglect the maintenance of their vehicles. A well-functioning tire pressure monitoring system can be crucial in preventing fires, as described in a report by adac.de.
Operations managers should also ensure that they react quickly to changes in steering behavior and check the tires if necessary. The safety of drivers and other road users should be a top priority, especially when such serious incidents occur. The police are therefore asking road users to avoid dangerous areas and to view the situation carefully.
