Fine dust particles (PM10) are recorded per cubic meter of air. The limit value for PM10 is that it must not exceed 50 particles per cubic meter and this may only happen 35 times per year. In general, air quality is assessed based on fine dust, nitrogen dioxide and ozone, with the limit values for healthy breathing air being clearly defined.
The air quality is classified as “very poor” if the values for nitrogen dioxide are over 200 μg/m³, for fine dust over 100 μg/m³ and for ozone over 240 μg/m³. Unfortunately, such values are not uncommon in many cities. A report by Deutsche Umwelthilfe shows that in 2022 over 69,000 people in Germany will die due to fine dust and over 28,000 People died because of nitrogen dioxide. These alarming figures highlight the danger posed by poor air quality.
Recommendations for poor air quality
In view of the current situation, it is advised to act accordingly if the air quality is poor. Sensitive people should avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially when the air is very bad. At moderate levels, the risk of short-term health effects is lower, but long-term effects cannot be ruled out. In general, when the air quality is “good,” it is recommended to go outside and enjoy the fresh air. Fireworks are particularly stressful on New Year's Eve, as around 1,500 tonnes of fine dust are released on New Year's Eve, which corresponds to 75% of the total annual amount.
