NDR visits Rostock Water Springer Club: A club is fighting for the future!

Rostock, Deutschland - On June 19, the moderators Julia Westlake and Philipp Schmid will visit the Rostock Water Springer Club as part of the “United in the north” program campaign “United in the north”. The association applied for this campaign and was selected to appreciate the voluntary commitment in sport. This shows how important the club is in the local sports landscape. The water jumper club Rostock e.V., which has existed for 25 years, has around 600 members, including 200 performance jumpers. Training intensity is high in the club: younger members train four times a week, while squad athletes invest more than 20 hours a week. About half of the training period is eliminated by dry training with acrobatics, stretching and strength exercises. The success of the athletes is impressive: Jette Müller took part in the 2024 Olympics, and the young athlete Finn Awe won two gold medals at the Junior World Championships in Rio. The association is the most successful German association in this competition category, which shows that something special is really happening here.

But the water jumper club is currently facing a big challenge. The Rostock Neptune Schwimmhalle, which serves as a training center, is being renovated, and the 25-meter pool remains closed from summer 2025 to April 2026. This forces the club to avoid his training sessions to Berlin, Dresden, Halle or Leipzig. This situation is anything but easy for the club members who are passionate about jumping water. Under the motto of the NDR, the association not only wants to draw attention to itself with this participation, but also gain support for coping with this difficult time.

renovation projects and funding in the region

The swimming pool in Halle also receives extensive renovation at the same time. Minister Tamara Zieschang recently handed over a notice of funding of 546,250 euros for the modernization, which should cost around 1.4 million euros. Almost two thirds of this sum are financed by the own funds of Bäder Halle GmbH. The aim of the measure is to create optimal training conditions for water jumpers. The renovation work at the Neustädter jumping hall began in the summer of 2023 and are expected to be completed by the end of 2024. Among other things, the bathing water technology is renewed and the filter systems are checked.

At the same time, the Brandenburg state government supports various sports facilities with a total scope of 25 million euros, under the funding program "Golden Plan Brandenburg". Here, the urgent investment needs of the sports clubs are responded. Sports Minister Britta Ernst particularly emphasizes the voluntary commitment of the sports clubs, which contributes to the quality of life in the cities and villages. The previous financial support is around 6.25 million euros annually and is aimed at modernizations and new buildings of sports facilities.

These developments show how important support for sports clubs in the region is, especially in times when many institutions are faced with renovation work and financial challenges. The efforts to promote and preserve sports facilities are a clear indicator that sport in Germany is not only a question of competition, but also the community and commitment.
