New sports hall opened in Toitenwinkel: modernization for 4.9 million euros!
On June 25, 2025, a ceremonial handover of the modernized sports hall was celebrated at Pablo-Picasso-Straße 43b, Toitenwinkel. The comprehensive renovation was carried out as part of the “Northeast Sports Facility Renovation Program”. During the renovation, the sports and social infrastructure was brought into shape, which primarily benefits the almost 1,000 students from the Baltic School, Coastal School and “An den Weiden” primary school, who can now use the hall.
The representatives of the city of Rostock are particularly proud of the numerous renovations, including a new photovoltaic system, underfloor heating and a sound-optimized acoustic ceiling in the hallway area. These measures will not only make school operations easier, but will also benefit numerous sports clubs, such as FSV Nordost Rostock, FC Förderkader René Schneider and the Rostock Seawolves. These clubs offer a wide range of sports, from football and basketball to martial arts and volleyball to health sports and self-defense.
Funding underlines the importance of renovation
The total costs of the renovation amount to around 4.9 million euros, with 1.34 million euros coming from urban development funding. Sigrid Hecht, KOE's operations manager, emphasized the importance of these funds for the realization of the project. “We are pleased that so many resources were available to bring the hall up to modern standards,” she said. With a seamless transition, the renovation of the neighboring hall at Pablo-Picasso-Straße 43, which is the tenth and final property on the renovation list, will begin in July 2025. Around 4 million euros are flowing here from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The project for Hall 43c has a total cost of almost 7.4 million euros. During the renovation period, physical education classes will be moved to the newly modernized Hall 43b, which is intended to ensure that school operations run smoothly. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2027.
Diverse funding opportunities
The promotion of sports facilities is an important concern, not only in Rostock, but also beyond the borders of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Construction measures in cities such as Schwerin, Neubrandenburg or Greifswald can also be supported by state funds. Newer funding guidelines are being planned, and those responsible are inviting interested sports clubs to apply for grants in good time. Anyone who would like to participate in the modernization of club-owned sports facilities should inform themselves and submit applications in good time via the district or city sports association.
A look at the funding programs in other federal states, such as North Rhine-Westphalia, shows that similar developments are also taking place there. As part of the “Modern Sports Facility 2022” program, 300 million euros are available to improve the sports facility infrastructure, with funds almost completely exhausted. A good reason to look into the possibilities of funding at this time!
The various funding opportunities offer a valuable opportunity to further modernize the sports facilities in Rostock and the surrounding area and to increase the quality of life through sporting activity. The city's commitment to sport can be seen everywhere - whether in modern school gymnasiums or in the diverse offerings for sports clubs.
