Rostock: Complete closure of the city harbor until August 19th – diversions necessary!
There is currently a large construction site in Rostock that is causing a lot of traffic confusion. Since Monday, the Am Strande road, which is one of the busiest routes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, has been completely closed for around 600 meters between Grubenstrasse and Wokrenterstrasse. These measures are necessary to renew the road surface and renovate the tracks of the Rostock tram after 38 years of intensive use. According to NDR, around 44,000 vehicles pass here every day, which makes the impact on traffic clear.
The comprehensive renovation is expected to last until August 19th. Not only is the renewal of the road surface on the agenda, but also the laying of new pipelines by the Rostock public utility company, which should ensure that less frequent closures are necessary in the future. Construction site operations follow modern techniques, such as the use of track support slabs, which offer high stability and reduce noise, as the Rostock Town Hall reports.
Traffic routing and diversions
The closure causes extensive diversions affecting both cars and trucks. Motorists are asked to use the following detour routes:
- Westlich über Am Kanonsberg
- Südlich über den Mühlendamm
- Östlich über den Verbindungsweg
However, the Holzpeninsula remains accessible via Lange Straße, Krämerstraße and Grubenstraße, which is a small relief for the residents. The tram service between Steintor and Dierkower Kreuz has been discontinued, and there is a replacement rail service between Paulstrasse and Kurt-Schumacher-Ring.
Timetable changes and intermodal transport
The changes in public transport cannot be overlooked. Tram line E now runs between Hafenallee and Dierkower Allee. In addition, numerous adjustments were made to the timetables of lines 1, 3, 5 and 6. NDR emphasizes that the SEV buses run every 5 minutes during the day and also provide regular connections on Saturdays and Sundays.
A helpful tip for all passengers: The Stadthafen stop is not served during this time, so you should keep a close eye on transfer options. In this context, it is advisable to look at the current information about the timetable on the Rostock tram website in order to stay up to date.
Despite the inconveniences that the station renovation entails, the measures offer an opportunity to improve the infrastructure for the coming years. The planners work with a clear focus on sustainable solutions in order to make traffic flows in Rostock efficient, as Schüssler+Plan shows. This could increase the quality of life in the Hanseatic city in the long term and promote mobility in the region.
With a little patience and possibly more time for travel, Rostock will soon be able to benefit from improved road and traffic infrastructure. So stay flexible and enjoy the changes!
