Rostock: Fewer wind turbines planned for a sustainable future!
While energy policy in Germany is undergoing noticeable changes, the focus is on developments in the Rostock district. The plans for wind turbines are currently being redesigned to take the federal government's new climate goals into account. As the Baltic Sea newspaper reported that the current draft of the regional spatial development program now plans 33 priority areas for wind energy. This is a significant decrease, as the first draft originally planned for 73 areas, many of which were deleted for environmental reasons.
The discussion about the expansion of wind power shows that the area on the Wustrow peninsula in particular was removed from the draft due to significant environmental concerns. Rerik's mayor Antje Wegner-Repke expressly welcomes this decision. It is still expected that the newly defined priority areas for wind turbines will actually be used. In the long term, 2% and in the short term 1.5% of the state's area should be available for wind farms, although the federal government is currently examining the long-term target, while the short-term target remains the same.
Trust and acceptance in the community
Acceptance among the population plays a crucial role in the planning of new wind power projects. Citizens and politicians must be actively involved in the process in order to create transparency and take concerns seriously. This could help reduce reservations about wind energy in neighborhoods. The Windenergie.de emphasizes that it is important to keep the legal framework in mind when planning. This includes laws such as the Renewable Energy Sources Act and the Building Code.
To go through the approval process, applicants must submit extensive reports that examine various environmental and social factors, including sound development, shadows and landscape appearance. Distance regulations from residential areas or protected areas are also essential. These measures are intended to minimize the impact on residents and the environment.
Regional characteristics and next steps
In view of the regional circumstances, there are still planned priority areas in Nienhagen and Börgerende, despite objections from community representatives. Mayor Horst Hagemeister and Nienhagen Mayor Peter Zemelka express concerns that these wind farms could have a negative impact on the landscape and tourism. At the same time, the club has 67 m - NO! e.V. started a petition against the planned wind turbines. This leaves residents with the question of how to find a balance of interests.
The planned priority areas vary considerably in size; from just 21 hectares in Güstrow-Nord to 233 hectares in Groß Bäbelin. A particularly large area of over 200 hectares is expected in Matersen, near Hohen Luckow. Citizens have until December 8, 2025 to comment on the draft before final decisions are made.
Overall, the success of wind power projects in the Rostock district depends on comprehensive planning, legally compliant procedures and, above all, on acceptance by the population. With professional information and an open dialogue, it could be possible to advance the wind power plans in the interests of all those involved.
