Rostock's Neue Bahnhofstrasse: 2.5 million for safe paths and gardens!
An extensive construction project in Rostock was recently successfully completed. On October 29, 2025, the “eastern section near Kuhtor” was officially opened to motorized traffic after 16 months of intensive work. This renovation included not only Bahnhofstrasse, but also the bridge underpass, sidewalks, green spaces and parking areas. The temporary diversions in the city have now been lifted for the benefit of residents and road users.
The work included a thorough renovation of the station streets and sidewalks in the bridge underpass. The roadway was also redesigned, not only widened but also additionally protected by bollards. Particularly pleasing: The new stairs and ramps in front of house numbers 7 and 7a on Ernst-Barlach-Straße are now accessible. This means that the routing has been greatly improved, which also makes barrier-free use easier.
Green spaces and infrastructure
In addition, larger green areas and seating areas were created around Ernst-Barlach-Straße. Two lime trees were integrated into a historic row of trees from the 18th century. The greening measures also include two newly planted fruit trees as well as ground cover and fresh lawns. Another plus point is the restructuring of the parking spaces: 17 parking spaces are now available here, and two charging stations for electric vehicles have also been set up.
The construction work went hand in hand with the renewal of underground drainage systems, which was carried out by Nordwasser GmbH on behalf of the Warnow Water and Wastewater Association. A new plastic combined sewer was laid over 120 meters and 60 pipe elements were installed using a controlled tunneling process. The old canal from 1913 was decommissioned while a 33 meter long section of storm sewer was renovated. Particularly important is the renewal of a drinking water pipe, some of which dates back to 1867.
Costs and financing
The costs for the entire measure amount to around 2.5 million euros. Of this, 1.25 million euros come from urban development funding, divided between the federal government, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the city of Rostock. The planning was carried out by VEAPLAN Rostock GbR and WASTRA-PLAN Ingenieurgesellschaft, while the structural implementation was carried out by ASA-Bau GmbH.
But Rostock doesn't stand still. The Warnow Water and Wastewater Association is already planning a variety of measures for 2024 to further improve the infrastructure. Significant investments totaling over 100 million euros are planned for the coming years. These funds are needed for various construction measures, including the renovation and expansion of water pipes and supply systems, with the aim of sustainably increasing the quality of life in Rostock. The high construction costs, which have increased by 35 percent since 2021, also pose a challenge to investment plans. Individual projects may need to be postponed to find new paths.
The official approval of the use of this important infrastructure was given by Dr. Ute Fischer-Gäde, who was on site on October 28, 2025 to appreciate the successful work. Rostock is on the right track, the city is flourishing and the construction projects are contributing to urban development. A commitment that pays off and noticeably improves the quality of life of citizens.
