Rostock's town hall shines in new splendor for its 750th anniversary!

It's going to be exciting in Rostock! Gerhard Weber, a passionate photographer, and Thomas Werner, a historian from the cultural office, take the population on a visual journey through time in their “Historical Views” series. These lectures take a look at the city's multifaceted history, which will have a special celebration in 2025: the town hall will receive a fresh coat of paint to mark the 750th anniversary of the confirmation of city charter. This further underlines the historical charm and gives the town hall system new vitality.

During the 1968 renovation, the town hall was provided with robust scaffolding consisting of an impressive structure. The Gothic display wall with its magnificent seven towers was reinforced by a wooden ladder frame. This exciting design raises questions, especially why this design was chosen. The limited load-bearing capacity of the roof was probably a decisive factor in the decision.

A look beyond the borders

A little further away, in Vienna, the magnificent Vienna City Hall, built in the neo-Gothic style, has an equally interesting architectural history. Designed by Friedrich von Schmidt and built between 1872 and 1883, the town hall is not only the city's administrative center, but also a cultural hotspot. With its 1,575 rooms and 2,035 windows, it is considered a landmark of Vienna and attracted the attention of many architects during its construction.

The laying of the foundation stone of Vienna City Hall took place on June 14, 1873. This architectural masterpiece, designed for the ever-growing city of Vienna, has not only been the home of the mayor, but also the scene of numerous cultural events over the years. Six inner courtyards and the large ballroom provide space for celebrations and events, while statues of well-known historical figures further decorate the magnificent room.

Looking at financing and history

The financing of the Vienna City Hall amounted to around 14 million florins, which was a huge sum for that time. This construction project was supported by both the City of Vienna and the k.k. Government supported. After damage in the Second World War, the building was extensively renovated in the 1950s and the interior was also restored in the 1970s. Ongoing maintenance is also reflected in the facade restoration from 2012 to 2023, which included around 40,000 m² of natural stone.

The all-round service means that both Vienna and Rostock promote the preservation of their architectural treasures. Where Vienna boasts a large tower and many historical figures, Rostock ensures that its town hall is appropriately presented for its 750th birthday. It turns out that tradition and history are important pillars for the urban character.

Other cities in the USA also have their charm. The Five Star Bank in Warsaw, NY has a long history that dates back to 1881. With over 48 locations, they offer a comprehensive service - a good example of continuous growth in the banking landscape. Today it is clear that no matter where you look, the development of cities and institutions remains exciting!
