Rostock's city cycling: Over 864,000 km cycled for the climate!
In the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock, the popular city cycling campaign is currently in full swing. Since June 15th and until July 5th, 2025, 4,232 cyclists have already registered there, which corresponds to a pleasing increase of 9% compared to the previous year. A total of an impressive 864,956 kilometers were covered - an increase of almost 20% compared to 2024. The campaign is organized by Daniel Heinisch, while Dr. Ute Fischer-Gäde, Senator for Urban Planning, Construction, Climate Protection and Mobility, supports the initiative.
The city cycling, which Rostock is organizing for the 16th time, is more than just a competition: it promotes climate-friendly mobility through the use of bicycles. Every kilometer counts, whether it's the way to work or shopping. A principle that not only seems to motivate the participants, but also underlines the need for better cycling infrastructure. After all, experts estimate that up to 30% of car journeys in metropolitan areas could be shifted to cycling, as data from the Federal Environment Agency show.
Nice successes and challenges
Particularly outstanding is the city administration team, which takes the lead with 55,366 kilometers - 239 members strong. The University of Rostock can also proudly cover 44,325 kilometers (213 members) and secure second place. Closely followed by the Rückwind crew, which with only four members covered an average of 1,346 kilometers each and therefore represents an active team.
Using the Stadtradel app is another plus point this year. 1,751 participants recorded their kilometers digitally, with a total of 170,640 kilometers recorded. This not only promotes transparency, but also enables the creation of GPS data that contributes to the analysis of cycling traffic in Rostock. The data collected is intended to sustainably improve the cycling infrastructure in the city.
Health benefits and environmental awareness
The health benefits of cycling cannot be underestimated. Moderate daily exercise, such as cycling, can significantly reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases. According to the Federal Environment Agency, cycling can even increase life expectancy by up to 14 months.
With regard to climate protection, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is a central concern. The City Cycling initiative makes an important contribution to this. Precisely because traffic causes around 22% of emissions, it is essential to increase the proportion of bicycle journeys. However, in order to achieve these goals, municipalities must also invest in better cycling infrastructure.
The campaign will conclude with the award ceremony on September 27, 2025, which will take place as part of the Climate Action Day in Rostock. A festival that not only honors the best teams, but also aims to further raise awareness of sustainable mobility. Cycling is not only fun, it also helps to protect the environment and promote your own health - many Cologne residents will certainly be happy to be there when the wheels are rolling again!
