Complete closure at the city harbor: Rostocker Straße causes traffic chaos!
From today, August 11, 2025, drivers in Rostock must expect a big change. The busy road along the city harbor, one of the busiest traffic arteries in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, will be completely closed between Grubenstrasse and Wokrenterstrasse until August 19, 2025. Here, the road surfaces are being renewed over a stretch of 600 meters, while at the same time the Rostock tram is having the tracks, which have been in operation for 38 years, renovated. Around 44,000 vehicles pass through this road every day, making the need for the work even more urgent.
The municipal utilities are taking advantage of the opportunity and laying new pipelines during the closure in order to avoid future disruptions and closures. To ensure that the traffic chaos does not get completely out of hand, diversions have been set up for cars and trucks: west via Am Kanonsberg, south via Mühlendamm and east via the connecting path. However, the Holzpeninsula remains accessible via Lange Straße, Krämerstraße and Grubenstraße. For tram users, traffic will be interrupted between the Steintor and Dierkower Kreuz stops, and a replacement rail service will be set up between Paulstrasse and Kurt-Schumacher-Ring. The closure means minor adjustments for tram line E, which runs in the northeast of Rostock: The line remains in operation between Hafenallee and Dierkower Allee.
Long-lasting traffic restrictions
The construction work may subsequently lead to further traffic restrictions on the “Am Strande” street for up to six months. This situation could lead to a noticeable backlog, particularly during the summer months when many tourists flock to Rostock and Warnemünde.
The road construction work is necessary not only to improve the infrastructure, but also to increase the attractiveness of the city. Rostock and Warnemünde are among the most popular excursion destinations on the Baltic Sea, and the city harbor is known for its impressive sunsets and numerous culinary offerings. Despite the construction work, the harbor, which has restaurants and pubs, will continue to be an attraction for locals and tourists.
Sights in Rostock
In the shadow of the current construction work, numerous sights in Rostock invite you to discover them. These include the Kröpeliner Tor, an iconic city gate from the 13th century, as well as the University of Rostock, the oldest university in Germany, founded in 1419. The St. Marien Church with its impressive astronomical clock and the modern Darwineum in the Rostock Zoo also complete the range of cultural highlights in the city.
In addition, the promenade along the Alter Strom in Warnemünde with its charismatic lighthouse and 2 km long beach promenade attracts many visitors. Here, guests can enjoy the view and look out over the Baltic Sea while strolling through the numerous shops and restaurants. If you would like to take a harbor tour, you can sail from Warnemünde to the Rostock city harbor and experience the beauty of the landscape from a different perspective.
The current road construction projects show that Rostock continues to focus on expanding its infrastructure. The aim is to optimally prepare the city for the future and to also consider environmentally friendly transport options, such as new cycle paths, and to carry out extensive maintenance measures.
