Forest adventure in Rostock: Fascinating nature on guided hikes!

The sun shines over the Rostock Heath and the anticipation of the coming hiking season is palpable. The Rostock City Forestry Office has once again come up with a lot of ideas this year to attract nature lovers to the region's magical forests. These annual forest hikes are not only an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful nature, but also to learn a lot of interesting facts. The Rostock town hall reports that from April onwards the traditional start to the new season was celebrated with the Easter walk.

Expert foresters accompany the guided hikes and provide insights into the diverse flora and fauna of the Rostock Heath. The first themed hikes take place at the end of June, and forest fans can look forward to different routes. The first bike hike begins on June 21, 2025 with district forester Stefan Schlüter. It leads past the Köhlerhof, the discovery trail, the concentration camp memorial and the impressive rhododendron park. The meeting point is at 10 a.m. at the Wiethagen City Forestry Office; the tour will last about two and a half hours.

A look into the future

The next dates for hikes have already been set: On July 26th there will be “Around the Kattenleger Bruch” with district forester Sven Ahrens. Here participants learn more about the animal inhabitants and forest management. Again on August 9th, district forester Christoph Willert will lead along the historic moor canal and tell stories about “traders, hermits and tourists”. A very special event will take place on August 30th: district forester Roger Kähler presents “History(s) in the Forest” in the Schnatermann district. Meeting points are always at 10 a.m. and the hikes will last up to two and a half hours.

But that's not all: September 13, 2025 will be marked not only by the seasonal highlight, the traditional “Forest Culture Night” in the Rostock Heath and Markgrafenheide, but also by the joint project by the Rostock & Warnemünde Tourism Office, the Rostock City Forestry Office and the Wiethagen Forestry and Köhlerhof.

Hikes around Rostock

For those who want to explore more than the forest hikes, the region has many other hiking tours. The routes invite you to discover the beautiful coastal landscape and the impressive nature reserves. A particularly recommended route leads from the Warnemünde lighthouse to Germany's oldest seaside resort, Heiligendamm. With a length of around 15 km, nature can be enjoyed to the fullest here. On the way are the historic coastal forest and the ghost forest in Nienhagen, which is popular with hikers.

Another pleasure is the hike from Warnemünde to Schnatermann, which provides an insight into the fascinating flora and fauna of the nature reserves. This 12 km long route also offers a wonderful view of the Warnow estuary. If you prefer a shorter route, you can take the planetary path along the coast, which provides information about the solar system with impressive information stations.

For hiking enthusiasts, whether experienced or just starting out - the Rostock Heath and the surrounding area promise natural experiences that will be remembered. Pack your hiking boots and discover the endless offerings!
