Saarland under pressure: Happiness Atlas shows worrying trends!

Saarland has suffered another loss in the latest edition of the Happiness Atlas and is now among the bottom of Germany. A report from WNDN shows that only Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania performs worse. With an average value of 6.78 points on a scale from 0 to 10, life satisfaction in Saarland remains below the national average.

Compared to the previous year, satisfaction increased slightly by 0.05 points. However, this only means that Saarland has reached the level of the mid-2010s, like Lesseniel reported. A look at the other federal states shows that Hamburg achieved the best result with 7.33 points, followed by Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate with 7.21 points each. Berlin has 6.83 points, while Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania lags behind with 6.06 points.

Causes of dissatisfaction

A central reason for the ongoing dissatisfaction in Saarland is the economic uncertainty, which is particularly placing a heavy burden on middle-income households. Families and professionals in the region feel far less satisfied than they did a decade ago. This is reinforced by the low values for work, family and income. Above all, the changes in life phenomena reflect a general dissatisfaction, even if young adults and people living alone show more stable satisfaction.

The disposable income in Saarland remains at the lower end, especially compared to the rest of the country. With a gross domestic product per capita of 42,880 euros, the region is well behind the West German average.

Positive things in everyday life

Classified as an “underperformer”, Saarland has a lot of catching up to do despite its objectively high quality of life and stable structures. This is also shown by the representative results of the survey, which asked 13,905 citizens aged 16 and over about general life satisfaction from July 2024 to June 2025.

In summary, Saarland remains a problem child in Germany, even if life satisfaction has improved slightly. The challenges are clear and citizens hope for positive developments in the future.
