Sweden Festival in Wismar: traffic restrictions from August 11th!

The 24th Sweden Festival will be celebrated in the Hanseatic city of Wismar from August 14th to 17th, 2025, and there is a lot to experience. There is great anticipation for this cultural event, as numerous attractions and Swedish traditions will once again be the focus this year. But before the festivities really get started, there will be some restrictions in city traffic, which NDR reports.

From today, August 11th, the market square in Wismar will be banned from parking until August 18th, 2025, 6 p.m. In addition, the market square will no longer be accessible by car from Monday morning, August 11th. From August 13th, additional road closures will be added on Dankwartstrasse, Breiten Strasse, Ziegenmarkt, Stockholmer Strasse and Mecklenburger Strasse. There will also be a ban on cycling in the area of the promenade at the Old Harbor. Therefore, drivers and cyclists must be careful and adjust their routes in good time.

Experience Sweden up close

The Sweden Festival is presented by NDR 1 Radio MV and Nordmagazin and offers more Swedish offerings than ever before. Visitors can look forward to a wonderful mix of culture, music and cuisine. Swedish troops, like the historic Carolinians, will camp in the market and re-enact exciting battles. This military-historical group is reminiscent of the 17th century and gives festival visitors an interesting insight into the past. The Royal Body Guard from Stockholm will also be on site and re-enact the changing of the guard.

Sweden is not only presented at this festival through its military past. Culinary delicacies such as Köttbullar, hot dog wraps, Kroppkakor and a variety of Swedish beers are also on offer. Anita Mellberg will be selling handicrafts on Krämerstrasse, while the city of Kalmar, Wismar's sister city, will also be there. The entire festival area will shine in Swedish colors and thus create the right atmosphere.

A program for the whole family

A special program is offered for children and families, supported by the housing association and the Wismar municipal utilities. Swedish artists and bands, including “Järfälla Musikkår” and “Gislaved Drums Corps”, will provide musical entertainment. The historical parade, the Sweden Trail, and the Sweden Run with different distances are also on the program. A special highlight will be the Children's Sweden Festival at the Fürstenhof, where the little visitors will get their money's worth.

The festival culminates with an Abba Revival concert on the Wismar market square. After the pandemic-related suspension, the popular battle depictions will also take place again, making the Sweden Festival a real festival of international understanding. Numerous Swedish guests, a delegation from Kalmar and mayors from Vänersborg and Trollhättan have already announced their coming. An opportunity not to be missed!

All we can say is: Get ready for an unforgettable time in Wismar! And remember to plan well in advance to avoid traffic restrictions and enjoy the festival to the fullest!
