Serious accident on the Baltic Sea: vacationer dies on cycle path after collision

On July 6, 2025, the picturesque Wismarbucht, in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg, occurred on a tragic incident on a bike path that demanded the life of a 60-year-old vacationer from Mönchengladbach. The woman was traveling with her husband, who had previously overtaken a larger group of cyclists, which she also prompted to overtake. With this overtaking maneuver in a difficult to see right curve, she collided with a 49-year-old racing cyclist, who, despite brakes and an alternative attempt, could no longer react in time. Both plunged, with the vacationer suffering serious injuries while the racing cyclist was only slightly injured. According to NDR, the woman had suffered a severe traumatic brain trauma and lung damage, despite the wearing of a helmet.

The accident site was along the Wohlenberger Wiek, a popular destination for cyclists and nature lovers. Unfortunately, this cycle path is not only attractive, but also dangerous, precisely because of the visibility in the relevant curve. After the collision, the 60-year-old was immediately reanimated at the scene of the accident before she was flown to a nearby hospital in Lübeck with a rescue helicopter. There, however, she succumbed to her serious injuries. Her husband was apparently with her until the end.

bicycle security and accident risks

The tragic incident is reminiscent of the alarming numbers, which emerges from a current study of accident research by insurers (UDV). This shows that there are an average of four deaths on German country roads and 58 seriously injured cyclists per week. Compared to ten years ago, there was an increase of almost 30 percent in the accidents. The main problem is the often inadequate visibility of cyclists, especially at critical areas such as crossings and difficult to see curves, where many accidents are done. The UDV unanimously demands that cycle paths have to be made more securely and appeals to all road users for caution and consideration. The NDR also addresses the need for secure transitions on bike paths and the removal of visual obstacles.

The injury to the holiday driver makes it clear how important these measures are. It was well protected, but helmet and experience as a cyclist were not enough to avert fate. It is particularly alarming that every third serious bike accident happens without further participants, be it through falls or other causes. This shows that not only braking cars and other road users are to be taken into account, but the conditions on the streets must also be improved. The Süddeutsche Zeitung According to the planning of our Cycle paths are urgently covered and modernized.

This tragic accident on the Baltic Sea is not only a wake -up call for cyclists, but also for all road users and decision -makers. We all have to work together on safer mobility so that such incidents can be prevented in the future. The respectful memory of the deceased vacationer warns us to take responsibility and to do more for the safety of all road users.
