Railway revolution: Faster connection between Schwerin and Lübeck!

Deutsche Bahn officially started the expansion of the railway line between Schwerin and Lübeck on June 13, 2025, and there is great interest in it. A symbolic groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of an important project that already promises many changes in the region. As ndr.de reports, the previously single-track line will be upgraded to a length of 63 kilometers to a double-track and electrified connection.

The aim of the modernization is to reduce the travel time between Schwerin and Lübeck from at least 80 minutes to around 53 minutes. From 2028, trains on this route will reach speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. A central element of the expansion is the new Gallentine curve, which will replace the previous detour via Bad Kleinen train station. This not only means faster connections for passengers, but also an upswing for the business location, as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Economics Minister Wolfgang Blank emphasizes.

Comprehensive modernization measures

But the expansion includes more than just the tracks themselves. According to deutschebahn.com, the train stations in Schönberg and Grieben will also be modernized, and two new digital signal boxes are planned in Bobitz and Gallentin. This combines with the overtaking tracks in Bobitz and Grevesmühlen, which will be extended for longer freight trains to make freight transport more efficient.

The project will be implemented in three planning approval phases:

  • PFA 1: Bad Kleinen–Grevesmühlen/Börzow, inklusive der Verbindungskurve bei Gallentin
  • PFA 2: Grevesmühlen/Börzow–Landesgrenze Mecklenburg-Vorpommern/Schleswig-Holstein
  • PFA 3: Landesgrenze Mecklenburg-Vorpommern/Schleswig-Holstein – Lübeck

Reductions in travel time and infrastructural advantages

The new routes not only lead to faster train connections, but are also part of the overarching Deutschlandtakt project, which is committed to shorter travel times and needs-based capacity in rail freight transport, as bmv.de explains. The aim is to achieve a nationally coordinated timing that takes rail transport to a new level and improves capacity at bottlenecks.

In summary, it can be said that the expansion of the route between Schwerin and Lübeck is not only a big step for the region, but will also contribute to strengthening the entire rail network in Germany. The positive effects are already noticeable today, but a lot will change and improve by 2028. This not only pleases commuters, but also everyone who lives and works in the region.
