Booklet scandal in Schwerin: Parents demand millions!
Schwerin is currently facing major challenges, while around 10,000 students enjoy their last school days before the summer vacation. But while the anticipation of the holidays is increasing, it is bubbling in the background. Parents are currently receiving the textbook lists for the coming school year, but the city parent council is full: they are calling for the abolition of booklet to be abolished because many parents are forced to buy workbooks for lessons themselves.
The city of Schwerin, as the sponsor of public schools, apparently sees the matter differently and rejects the procurement of teaching and learning aids. "This is not only unfair, but also illegal," notes the city parent council and therefore contacted the Ministry of the Interior. A direct intervention by the Ministry of Education also fails, since the responsibility for the procurement of learning tools lies with the municipal school providers. The Ministry of Education and Daycare for Child Day Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania confirms that common practice, in which parents have to procure learning aids themselves, violates the school law.
The financial pressure on parents and city
The situation is delicate: According to calculations, an estimated 6,000 pupils in Schwerin have average costs of 30 euros per child and school year. This adds up to an impressive 180,000 euros per school year, i.e. around 1.8 million euros over the past ten years. These illegal payments are not only stressful for the parents, but also for the city, which has spared expenses through this practice. "The city must finally take responsibility," demands the city parent council.
Another point of uncertainty is the reimbursement of this illegally made payments to the parents. "It is still unclear how all this should be coped with," said a parent representative. In the upcoming July meeting of the Committee on School and Culture, the topics could finally be taken up, and Mayor Badenschier must fundamentally reorganize the procurement of learning aids by the school year 2025/26.
