Volunteer judges wanted: Application deadline is September 15th!
There is currently an interesting opportunity for legally committed citizens in the beautiful Mecklenburg Lake District region. The district is urgently looking for applicants for the position of honorary judge at the Neubrandenburg Social Court and the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Social Court. Again Northern Courier reported, the application deadline is September 15, 2025. If you are interested, you should take action as soon as possible!
The application is made in writing and must be submitted using a handwritten, signed form. All necessary forms and an informative leaflet are available on the district's website. Basically, there are a few requirements that must be met: For the social court you should be at least 25 years old, while for the state social court the minimum age is raised to 30 years. In addition, at least five years of work as a volunteer judge at the social court is required in order to be considered for the state social court.
Important information for those interested
Do you live in the region? This is desirable, but not absolutely necessary. What must be taken into account, however, are legal restrictions. For example, anyone who has lost the right to vote or has been sentenced to prison is excluded from applying. It's worth reading the details carefully.
The fact that the social justice system in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is responsible for a large number of disputes should not be ignored. The courts take care of, among other things, matters relating to social insurance, unemployment insurance, basic security, social assistance and disability law. The legal disputes go through a three-tier system: first the social courts in Neubrandenburg, Schwerin, Rostock and Stralsund, followed by the state social court in Neustrelitz and finally the federal social court in Kassel.
The role of honorary judges
Did you know that volunteer judges play an equal role in jurisprudence as professional judges? This is an important element of the German justice system. They have the same right to vote and are also bound by the oath that they must take before their first official act. They are also bound by judicial independence. These aspects guarantee that decisions are made unbiased.
The term of office of honorary judges is usually five years, although re-appointment is possible. From 2026, around 500 new volunteer judges will be appointed to create a uniform term of office. This not only takes better account of legal work, but also social participation, as citizens are involved in the jurisprudence.
Anyone who feels addressed should not hesitate for long. Employers are obliged to tolerate the work of their employees as honorary judges without having to fear any disadvantages. Compensation for travel costs, loss of earnings and other expenses also leaves no room for uncertainty. These are regulated transparently so that no one is left with additional costs.
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the President of the State Social Court is responsible for appointing volunteer judges. However, applications for the position are not possible directly as appointments are made based on lists of proposals drawn up by various institutions. These lists of suggestions vary depending on the area of expertise and the judicial body in which the volunteer judges are to work MV Justice affirmatively confirmed.
So if you think this is something for you, you should do some research as soon as possible and start putting together your application. You could potentially become an important piece of the puzzle in German jurisprudence!
